About

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is a 1996 side-scrolling platform adventure developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. The final SNES entry in the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy follows Dixie Kong and her young cousin Kiddy Kong after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong vanish in the Northern Kremisphere. The pair set out across a region of forests, lakes, mills, cliffs, and snowy mountains to uncover what the Kremlings are planning and bring the missing Kongs home.

Players guide Dixie and Kiddy through levels packed with jumps, enemies, moving platforms, hidden routes, collectibles, and barrel-based puzzles. A second Kong can be kept in reserve, and the active character can be switched during a stage. Dixie's ponytail spin slows her fall and helps her cross long gaps, while Kiddy's greater weight lets him bounce across water and break through certain weak floors. The two can also be picked up and thrown, making their different abilities part of both navigation and secret hunting.

The journey is structured around an explorable world map rather than a single straight path. Funky Kong supplies vehicles that open new routes through the Northern Kremisphere, while the Brothers Bear offer clues, services, and trade opportunities in exchange for Bear Coins and other items found along the way. This travel system gives the adventure a light puzzle element outside the action stages, as progress can depend on discovering the right route or completing an exchange with one of the bears.

Animal friends expand the Kongs' moveset in selected areas. Returning helpers include Enguarde the swordfish, Squawks the parrot, and Squitter the spider, while Ellie the elephant can draw in water with her trunk and spray it at obstacles or foes. Levels range from land-based platforming to underwater sections and fast-moving set pieces, with bonus areas rewarding careful exploration. Players can also seek out the level-specific DK Coins and rescue Banana Birds through short memory challenges in hidden caves.

Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! continues the series' pre-rendered visual approach, using detailed character sprites and layered backgrounds to create its distinctive SNES look. Its story eventually reveals that KAOS, the apparent new Kremling leader, is connected to the returning King K. Rool, here using the name Baron K. Roolenstein. The game supports one or two players, with team and contest options that let a second participant join the action in different ways.

Originally released for SNES in North America in November 1996, Donkey Kong Country 3 arrived near the end of the system's commercial life but completed Rare's three-game 16-bit run for Nintendo. It was later adapted for Game Boy Advance with changed audiovisual content and additional material, while the original SNES version has also appeared through Nintendo's digital rereleases. For players exploring the trilogy, this installment stands out for putting Dixie in the lead, pairing her with Kiddy, and combining familiar Donkey Kong Country platforming with a more interconnected overworld full of optional discoveries.
