About
WipEout for PlayStation is Psygnosis’s 1995 futuristic racing game, released in Europe alongside Sony’s new console and published there by Sony Computer Entertainment. Set in 2052, it introduces the F3600 Anti-Gravity Racing League, where sleek, hovering racing craft tear through enclosed high-speed circuits. The original PlayStation release established the series’ blend of science-fiction racing, combat pickups and a deliberately stylised electronic-music identity.
Races are won by piloting an anti-gravity craft cleanly and quickly around demanding courses rather than by simply holding top speed. The four available teams field machines with their own balances of acceleration, maximum speed, mass and turning ability, so selecting a team meaningfully changes how a race feels. Steering through banked corners, crests and narrow passages requires careful control of speed and line; impacts with circuit walls cost momentum, while the fastest routes reward committed, accurate driving.
The main championship begins in the comparatively manageable Venom class. Success opens the faster Rapier class, raising the pace and presenting altered versions of the courses. Players can also choose a single race to practice a particular circuit or enter a time trial to concentrate on lap times. That progression gives the PlayStation game a clear route from learning the handling of an individual craft to managing the far more demanding speeds of the upper class.
WipEout adds an extra tactical layer with pickup pads positioned around the tracks. Passing over them can supply offensive devices such as missiles, rockets, mines and shock waves, as well as defensive shields and a turbo boost. These tools are intended to disrupt rivals or protect a lead, but they do not replace the need to navigate the course well. The contest remains a race first: players must decide when to collect a pickup, when to deploy it, and when preserving a clean racing line is more valuable.
The PlayStation version also supports competitive two-player racing through the PlayStation Link Cable, with both players racing alongside the remaining computer-controlled field. Its controls are compatible with the standard PlayStation pad, and the game supports Namco’s NeGcon controller for players who want its twisting steering input. The setting, team presentation and fictional league give the individual events a shared sports-world framework rather than treating each circuit as an isolated race.
Psygnosis developed WipEout during PlayStation’s formative period, and its presentation was shaped with graphic designers The Designers Republic. Composer Tim Wright, credited as CoLD SToRAGE, supplied original music, while some PlayStation editions also include tracks by electronic artists including Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers and Orbital. The game later reached MS-DOS and Sega Saturn, but the 1995 PS1 edition is the first entry in the WipEout series and the foundation for its 1996 follow-up, Wipeout 2097, known as Wipeout XL in North America.
As an early PlayStation release, WipEout brought its anti-gravity league, track-based weapons and sharply graphicised future to an audience encountering Sony’s 3D console for the first time. Its mixture of racing precision, combat interference, electronic sound and distinctive visual direction made the original game a defining starting point for a long-running futuristic-racing series.
