About
Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki: Alternative Saga for PSP is a 2010 crossover battle-action game developed and published by Nihon Falcom. Released in Japan on July 29, it brings together heroes, rivals, and supporting characters from Falcom's Ys series and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series. Rather than playing as a conventional turn-based role-playing game, it presents fast battles in enclosed 3D arenas, with a viewpoint and movement style built around action combat. The Japanese title is also known internationally as Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga.
Players choose a combatant from the two series and defeat the opposing side through direct, real-time attacks. Standard strikes can be chained into combinations, while attacking in midair adds aerial options. Holding the attack button produces a charged blow, a useful way to apply greater force and build Skill Points more quickly. Positioning matters as well: arenas include changes in elevation, and the game mixes close-range pressure, jumping, and movement across the battlefield instead of limiting matches to a flat fighting plane.
Each playable character can use a customizable selection of skills. Skill Points are earned by landing attacks or taking damage, then spent by combining the R button with a face button to activate the equipped technique. A separate EXTRA gauge fills during battle; once it is full, an EXTRA skill delivers a particularly powerful attack. The game also includes a one-use support call for each fight. Chosen support characters provide temporary special effects, giving players another decision beyond their main fighter's personal moveset.
Its cast makes the central appeal clear: figures associated with Ys face counterparts from Trails in the Sky in battles that would not occur within either series alone. Adol Christin and Estelle Bright are among the marquee representatives, while familiar allies and adversaries expand the roster. The crossover reaches beyond those two headline series for support appearances from other Falcom works. Stages likewise draw on recognizable locations, including settings connected to Ys and the Liberl Kingdom of Trails in the Sky.
Story Mode follows the selected character across a world map, where choosing stages triggers events and fights. Fully voiced scenes provide character exchanges between the battles, and certain boss encounters allow the player to choose an ally and fight together. A separate survival-style mode challenges one fighter to clear ten consecutively selected opponents. Completing battles earns Battle Points; accumulating them raises the player's rank and leads to rewards such as equipment, encouraging continued use and development of individual characters.
Free Mode is designed for more flexible matches. Players can choose participants, form teams, select a stage, and adjust rules including time limits, levels, and background music. On the original PSP release, ad hoc wireless play supports battles for up to four people, making the game a portable local multiplayer showcase as well as a solo crossover adventure. The original Japanese edition paired these modes with full Japanese voice acting.
Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki: Alternative Saga is a notable snapshot of Falcom's 2010 catalog, built around the meeting of two of the company's defining role-playing series while adapting their characters to a competitive action format. It later received an official English-language release under the title Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows in 2025. That later edition is distinct from the PSP version represented here, but it preserves the crossover's premise of Ys and Trails characters meeting in battle.
