About
Ys: The Ark of Napishtim for PSP is Konami's 2006 handheld version of Nihon Falcom's 2003 action RPG, the sixth numbered adventure in the long-running Ys series. It follows red-haired traveler Adol Christin after a Romun naval attack sends him through the Great Vortex, an unnatural storm barrier surrounding the Canaan Islands. Washed ashore on Quatera, Adol is helped by Olha and Isha of the Rehda, a people wary of outsiders whose homeland has been disrupted by foreign excavation. His search for a route home becomes an expedition through island settlements, ancient ruins, and the legacy of the winged Eldeen civilization.
The game is a single-player action RPG viewed from an elevated angle. Adol moves directly through connected fields, towns, caves, and dungeons while fighting visible enemies in real time. Rather than relying on the contact-based combat of some early Ys games, this installment gives him manual sword strikes, jumps, aerial attacks, and directional techniques. A dash jump is important both for traversal and for reaching optional ledges, chests, and routes, so exploration asks players to pay attention to movement as well as combat.
Three swords forged from Emelas drive much of the progression. Livart, Brillante, and Ericcil are tied to wind, fire, and lightning respectively, with their own attack behavior and magic. Emel collected from enemies and containers can strengthen the weapons, while experience, equipment, and restorative items support Adol as the danger rises. The changing sword abilities also give the adventure its rhythm: new powers improve fighting options and help open paths through the Canaan Islands' forests, rocky coasts, ruins, and other hostile locations.
Adol's journey brings him into contact with the pirate captain Ladoc and his crew, his steadfast companion Dogi, the port town of Rimorge, mercenary Geis, and an advancing Romun force led by Ernst. At the center of the conflict is the Ark of Napishtim, an ancient mechanism connected to the islands' weather and the Great Vortex. The story uses familiar Ys ideas such as lost civilizations, powerful artifacts, and a self-contained stop on Adol's wider travels, while also linking its Eldeen history and Emelas relics to mythology from earlier entries.
Falcom built the original Windows release with three-dimensional environments and sprite-based characters, a technical and design direction that later informed Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin. Konami's PlayStation 2 adaptation altered that presentation with polygonal character models, voice acting, new movies, Alma's Trials, and other added material. The PSP edition is closer to Falcom's original game instead: it does not retain the PS2 version's voices, polygonal character replacements, or Alma's Trials. Its Western release adds optional quests, an image and music gallery, and challenge modes, making Ys: The Ark of Napishtim PSP a portable take on Adol's Canaan Islands adventure rather than a straight copy of the PlayStation 2 release.
