About
Urakata Hakuoki: Akatsuki no Shirabe is a Japanese PSP otome adventure set against the turmoil of the Bakumatsu, the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Released in Japan in 2014 by Idea Factory under its Otomate brand, it is the expanded follow-up to Urakata Hakuoki and uses the Hakuoki series' blend of late-Edo history, romance and supernatural fiction from a different viewpoint. Its story is an original “what if” branch rather than a retelling of the main Hakuoki narrative, placing figures associated with the anti-shogunate movement at the center.
The player follows Kozue Kirishima, a young woman who runs her late father's Kyoto dojo with her older brother, Sosuke. In Bunkyu 3, a winter-night attack by white-haired, red-eyed men changes her life: her brother disappears while protecting her. Determined to find him and avenge the attack, Kozue takes up a sword and enters a political world far larger and more dangerous than the life she knew. The premise pairs her personal search with an imagined struggle over Japan's future.
Rather than making the Shinsengumi the principal romantic focus, Akatsuki no Shirabe foregrounds men on the sonno joi, or imperial-loyalist and anti-foreign, side of the period's political conflict. Historical names are reimagined as dramatic characters in a fantasy romance, including Shinsaku Takasugi, Kogoro Katsura, Izo Okada, Thomas Glover, Ryoma Sakamoto, Shintaro Nakaoka, Aritomo Yamagata, Genzui Kusaka and Hirobumi Ito. The familiar Hakuoki characters appear, but are not romance routes in this installment.
The game is structured around three modes. Renbo Tsuzuri offers after-stories for the four original Urakata Hakuoki leads—Takasugi, Katsura, Okada and Glover—so it continues relationships established in the preceding game. Reimei no Wadachi returns to the main time frame and adds routes for previously unavailable characters as well as new characters. After particular conditions are met, Tsuioku no Kiseki opens two special, novel-style episodes that look back at the past of the Shoin Academy students and the Kirishima siblings.
Like other visual novels in the franchise, much of the experience is built from narrated scenes, dialogue, character choices and route-specific developments. Akatsuki no Shirabe also retains an exploration element from its predecessor. When the scenario calls for travel, players guide a small representation of Kozue around the map to visit locations and advance events. This gives the otherwise text-led romantic adventure a light sense of movement and discovery while keeping the focus on its characters and branching drama.
The cast helps define the game's appeal. Kozue is voiced by Saori Hayami, with an option to turn her voice on or off. The main route characters include Tomokazu Sugita as Takasugi, KENN as Katsura, Kenichi Suzumura as Okada, Takahiro Sakurai as Glover, Daisuke Ono as Sakamoto, Daisuke Hirakawa as Nakaoka, Kenji Hamada as Yamagata, Daisuke Namikawa as Kusaka and Daisuke Kirii as Ito. Their portrayals frame the historical inspirations as distinct partners whose ideals, loyalties and conflicts shape Kozue's journey.
Akatsuki no Shirabe is therefore best approached as a Japanese-language, female-oriented historical fantasy romance for PSP and as a companion to Urakata Hakuoki. It expands that subseries with new romance paths, continuation stories and unlockable side scenarios, while preserving the wider Hakuoki atmosphere of swords, rival political visions and the supernatural threat of the Rasetsu. For players interested in the franchise's alternate perspectives on the Bakumatsu, it offers a story centered on a heroine pursuing both justice for her family and a place within a changing age.
