About
Uta no Prince-sama: Debut for PSP is a Japanese otome adventure game in Broccoli’s music-and-idol series. Released in Japan on May 24, 2012, it follows the academy story of the earlier games one year after the graduation audition. Broccoli published the PSP release, while Nippon Ichi Software handled development. The player returns to the perspective of aspiring composer Haruka Nanami as the young idols connected with Shining Agency work toward their official debuts.
The central objective is to guide a chosen partner through the next stage of his career. At the beginning, the player names the heroine and selects one of seven rookie idols as her partner: Otoya Ittoki, Masato Hijirikawa, Natsuki Shinomiya, Tokiya Ichinose, Ren Jinguji, Syo Kurusu, or Cecil Aijima. Their training takes a new turn when Shining Saotome invites them to a Master Course, an advanced program intended to prepare them for a professional debut. The course also introduces four established senior idols—Reiji Kotobuki, Ranmaru Kurosaki, Ai Mikaze, and Camus—whose presence expands the cast and the challenges facing the rookies.
Like the earlier Uta no Prince-sama adventures, Debut combines a voiced visual-novel presentation with choice-driven character routes. Conversations play out through text and character voice performances, and key responses alter the heroine’s romance value as well as the immediate direction of scenes. Chapters already played can be revisited through chapter select, making it practical to retrace decisions and explore another outcome. Each partner has three possible endings, determined by the romance and music values accumulated across the route.
Music is not just part of the setting in Uta no Prince-sama: Debut PSP; it is an active part of progression. At set points, the story moves into rhythm-game lessons where players press the triangle, cross, square, and directional buttons in time with the scrolling prompts. The minigames offer Easy and Hard difficulty settings, and performance affects the music value and subsequent story developments. The PSP version uses songs created for this game, tying the button-timing sections directly to the partnership at the center of the selected route.
Debut is specifically the bridge between the school-era stories and the characters’ professional-idol ambitions, rather than a retelling of the original game. Its themes of practice, work, friendship, romance, and performance are framed around the pressure of making a first formal debut. Chisato Kurahana provided the original character designs, Elements Garden produced the music, and Mamoru Miyano performs the theme song, “Innocence.” The game remained a PSP release in its original form before Broccoli brought the same game content to Nintendo Switch in 2021, preserving this chapter of the series for a later platform.
