About

Suikoden II for the original PlayStation is Konami's single-player role-playing sequel, first released in Japan in 1998 and in North America in 1999. Set three years after the first Suikoden, it moves the series to the Dunan region, where the Kingdom of Highland and the City-States of Jowston stand on the edge of another war. The player names the young hero, an adopted son of the martial artist Genkaku, who begins as a member of Highland's Unicorn Youth Brigade alongside his closest friend, Jowy. What starts as a military assignment quickly places the pair at the center of a conflict shaped by broken truces, ambition, and competing loyalties.

Exploration follows the familiar PlayStation-era Japanese RPG format. Players travel across towns, field areas, and dungeons, speak with residents, buy equipment and rune magic, and fight random encounters in turn-based battles. A standard combat party can contain six characters, with commands for weapon attacks, items, defensive actions, and rune abilities. Weapons can be sharpened rather than routinely replaced, while runes provide spells and special powers with limited uses at each spell level. The game's experience system gives lower-level party members a chance to catch up quickly against stronger foes, which makes it practical to try new recruits instead of relying on the same small group throughout the adventure.

Recruitment is the defining thread of Suikoden II. The hero can gather the 108 Stars of Destiny, a large cast whose members include warriors, magicians, merchants, inventors, and other specialists. Some join the active battle roster, while others strengthen the army's headquarters or add services and diversions to it. Building that base turns the campaign into more than a sequence of battles: progress brings new allies, facilities, conversations, and options. The game also has team-specific Unite attacks, allowing particular combinations of party members to perform joint moves that reflect their relationships and give party-building a tactical dimension.

Its story is framed through the friendship of the hero, Jowy, and their foster sister Nanami. After escaping an attack on their own unit, the hero and Jowy become involved with the resistance to Highland's advance. Each receives one half of the Rune of Beginning, a powerful True Rune tied to the series' world, while the two friends find themselves on increasingly different paths. The wider conflict encompasses the city-states, Highland's royal family, mercenary allies, and military leaders such as the feared Prince Luca Blight. The narrative's stakes are political as well as personal, centering on alliances, responsibility, and the human cost of war.

Suikoden II varies its encounters beyond regular party combat. Story duels put the hero one-on-one with an opponent and ask the player to read dialogue cues before choosing among attack, wild attack, and defense. Large-scale war scenes use squads on a grid, where recruited characters can serve as leaders or support personnel and can contribute abilities such as ranged attacks or healing. These modes sit alongside the main turn-based battles, so the campaign alternates between intimate confrontations and the command of a growing force. A save from the first Suikoden can also affect the sequel by allowing returning characters and continuity details to carry over.

The original PlayStation release is a sprite-based 2D RPG created and published by Konami, and it remains the second numbered entry in the Suikoden series. Its later history includes a PlayStation Network release and inclusion in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which revisits the first two games on newer platforms. For players exploring the PS1 version, Suikoden II offers a self-contained Dunan campaign while rewarding familiarity with the earlier game through returning characters and save-data connections. Its combination of a large recruitable cast, headquarters development, rune magic, and several battle formats gives this war story a distinct place within Konami's RPG catalogue.
