About

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is Capcom’s 2D one-on-one fighting game for PlayStation, released in 1999. It is the third and final entry in the Street Fighter Alpha series, bringing the series’ fast-paced combat and animated presentation to Sony’s console.

The game’s central system is the choice of three fighting styles, called Isms. A-ism uses a three-level Super Combo gauge, X-ism trades versatility for greater attack power and a single powerful Super Combo, and V-ism enables custom-combo play rather than Super Combos. Each style changes a fighter’s available options and encourages a different approach to matches.

Alpha 3 also adds a Guard Power Gauge that is depleted by blocking. When it breaks, a fighter is left open to attack, creating another layer of pressure around defense. The game retains series staples such as special moves, throws, air blocking in applicable styles, and dramatic Super Combo attacks.

The PlayStation release expands on the arcade roster with console additions including Dee Jay, Fei Long, T. Hawk, Guile, Evil Ryu, and Shin Akuma, alongside fighters such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Sakura, Zangief, Cammy, and M. Bison. Newcomers to Alpha 3 include R. Mika, Karin Kanzuki, and Final Fight’s Cody.

Its home version includes Arcade, Versus, Training, Entry, and World Tour modes. World Tour lets players take a chosen character through a sequence of matches while building up and customizing aspects of that fighter’s style, and it is also tied to unlocking some characters.

Street Fighter Alpha 3’s PlayStation conversion became a notable console version of Capcom’s arcade fighter, with a broad roster and extensive single-player options. It later formed the basis for expanded editions on other systems, while the original PlayStation release remains a distinct entry in the game’s release history.
