About

Splatterhouse PSP is the Japanese Game Archives release of Namco’s 1990 PC Engine version of the landmark horror action game. Added to the Japanese PlayStation Store for PSP on July 6, 2011, this download is the classic 2D adventure rather than the later 2010 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 reboot. It follows university student Rick after he and Jennifer seek shelter from a storm at the ominous West Mansion, where Jennifer vanishes and Rick is revived by the powerful Terror Mask.

The aim is to force a path through West Mansion and rescue Jennifer while surviving a succession of grotesque enemies. Rick advances through side-scrolling areas on foot, stopping to fight creatures and confront stage-ending bosses. The game’s premise, oversized monsters, unsettling scenery, and horror-film-inspired imagery give the straightforward action an unusually dark identity for its era. The mansion is as important to the atmosphere as the enemies themselves, with each new area revealing another disturbing obstacle on Rick’s search.

On PSP, the Game Archives version preserves the PC Engine game’s direct control scheme. The directional pad moves Rick, lets him duck, and is used to collect items from the ground or wall; one face button attacks and the other makes him jump. Rick can fight bare-handed, using punches and crouching attacks, while jump timing matters around hazards and during combat. Weapons found inside the mansion provide temporary extra force, including close-range tools and firearms such as the shotgun, so players must decide when to use what the house offers.

This is a single-player release built around repeated forward progress, enemy patterns, weapon pickups, and boss encounters instead of the 3D combat systems associated with the 2010 reinterpretation. Its PlayStation Store date reflects a later portable availability for the PC Engine original, which itself adapted Namco’s 1988 arcade game for home hardware. That distinction is central to Splatterhouse PSP: it is a portable digital edition of the classic PC Engine experience, not a separate PSP remake or sequel.

Splatterhouse PSP also retains the series foundations that later entries expanded: Rick, Jennifer, West Mansion, and the Terror Mask. The original game’s combination of side-scrolling brawling, platforming touches, and deliberately macabre presentation established the tone for the franchise. For players exploring the PSP Game Archives catalogue, this edition offers the early Splatterhouse formula in its Japanese PC Engine form, with its tense mansion setting and focused one-player escape at the center.
