About

Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Special is Koei and Omega Force’s PlayStation Portable version of the Three Kingdoms action game better known internationally as Dynasty Warriors 6: Special. Released in Japan in October 2009, it brings the series’ one-versus-thousands battlefield formula to PSP while building on the expanded PlayStation 2 edition rather than simply duplicating the earlier PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release. Players choose from the generals, strategists, and rulers associated with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tradition, then fight for the rival Wei, Wu, and Shu forces across a dramatized ancient China.

The central activity is large-scale hack-and-slash combat. Each battlefield is populated by regular troops, officers, and fortified bases, and the player works through battle objectives while cutting a path toward the opposing commander. Light and powerful attacks form the basis of combat, with blocks, evasive movement, mounted travel, and character-specific weapons helping an officer deal with crowds or confront a dangerous rival. Capturing bases matters because it changes control of the field: defeating the troops and key defenders weakens a position until it can be claimed for the player’s army.

As in Dynasty Warriors 6, the game uses the Renbu system to shape attacks. Landing blows builds the Renbu gauge and unlocks more elaborate strings, while losing momentum gradually reduces the available rank. A character’s development also includes a skill tree, which can improve attributes and open additional combat options. Weapons have their own properties and categories rather than functioning only as a fixed sequence of increasingly strong finds. Battlefield item drops can also grant temporary special attacks, giving the player an extra way to clear a crowd, strengthen an officer, or create an opening during a critical encounter.

Musou Mode provides story-led campaigns for selected officers, retelling pivotal conflicts and personal perspectives within the era’s long struggle for China. Free Mode lets players revisit battles with a broader choice of warriors, while Challenge Mode offers a more score- or objective-focused alternative to the campaign structure. The setting draws on the same historical novel and popular legend that have defined the series from its beginning, so familiar figures such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Lu Bu appear as larger-than-life combatants rather than as a strict historical simulation.

The Special version is notable for expanding material that was absent from the original high-definition release. Six officers who had not received Musou Mode stories there gained campaigns in the Special edition, along with their own weapons and move sets, and extra stages broadened the battle selection. The PSP release retains that Special content and adds Meng Huo as a Free Mode character, bringing its playable roster to 42. This makes the handheld edition an important variation within the Dynasty Warriors 6 family, not merely a reduced-format conversion.

Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Special also makes use of PSP ad hoc connectivity for two-player cooperative play. Allies can enter battles together and use the cooperative Geki Musou Ranbu technique, adding a shared option to a series usually associated with a lone hero pushing through an army. The portable structure suits short sessions as well as longer campaign play: a single battle can be revisited to improve a character, pursue different objectives, or test another general’s weapon and story route.

Within the broader Dynasty Warriors series, this release captures a transitional period for Omega Force’s long-running interpretation of the Three Kingdoms. Its Renbu-led combat and revised character presentation set it apart from earlier entries, while Special restores and enlarges story content for several officers. For PSP players in Japan, it offered a full-scale Three Kingdoms battlefield game with a substantial roster, campaign modes, and local cooperative features in a handheld form.
