About

Sengoku Basara: Chronicle Heroes is a PlayStation Portable team-battle action game released by Capcom in Japan on July 21, 2011. Developed by Access Games and published by Capcom, it is the second handheld entry in the Sengoku Basara line after Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes. Like the wider series, it turns Japan's Sengoku, or Warring States, period into a deliberately flamboyant action setting: familiar historical warlords become stylized heroes, rival armies collide, and personal loyalties are played out through fast battlefield combat.

The PSP game is built around compact encounters in which players select warriors, move through a battlefield, defeat opposing troops, and take on enemy commanders. Each fighter brings a distinct weapon and fighting style, so the choice of character shapes the rhythm of attacks, movement, and special techniques. The goal is not historical simulation; Chronicle Heroes uses the era as a stage for heightened one-on-one confrontations and army battles, carrying the series' theatrical approach to samurai figures such as Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura onto a portable system.

A central feature is its team format. Players can assemble a side from the game's warlords and fight in matches designed around opposing teams, with both standard and uneven team arrangements available. The game supports solo play, while its ad hoc communication mode allows two to four people to take part locally. That emphasis on group battles extends the formula of Battle Heroes rather than simply recreating the larger console games on PSP, making the composition of a team part of the experience alongside individual character control.

Chronicle Heroes adds aerial combat to the previous PSP foundation. Height differences within some stages and attacks that continue in the air give battles a more vertical character, allowing combos to be carried through jumps rather than ending at ground level. These additions are especially relevant during crowded confrontations, where changing position, pursuing a foe, and maintaining pressure all matter. The result is an action system aimed at quick, expressive exchanges while retaining the accessible mission-based structure suited to handheld play.

The game draws material from across the first six Sengoku Basara games and introduces characters associated with 2010's Sengoku Basara 3, known outside Japan as Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. Ishida Mitsunari and the redesigned Tokugawa Ieyasu are among the newer faces, while long-standing series leads Masamune and Yukimura return. Sekigahara, the decisive historical battlefield that also informs the setting of Sengoku Basara 3, appears in a new interpretation for the PSP version, linking this side entry to the contemporary mainline release.

Its various modes give the action a progression beyond isolated bouts. The Unification Chronicle mode has players advance through a map of Japan toward a character-specific climax, with battles and series callbacks along the way. Other options include missions and challenges, free battles that revisit cleared encounters, and team battle play. This mix lets a player pursue a campaign route, practice with particular warriors, or shift to competitive local matches without leaving the same character-driven combat framework.

Sengoku Basara: Chronicle Heroes arrived during a period when Capcom was extending the franchise across games and other media. It remains a PSP-focused companion to the console-era Sengoku Basara 3 rather than a port of it, preserving the series' oversized personalities and rapid action in a format designed for short sessions and local ad hoc play. For fans following the Japanese Sengoku Basara releases, it connects the earlier Battle Heroes approach with the cast and imagery of the series' third major installment.
