About

Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes for PSP is a 2009 action spin-off in Capcom's flamboyant Sengoku Basara series. Developed by Access Games and published by Capcom, it arrived in Japan on April 9, 2009, bringing the series' exaggerated take on Japan's Warring States era to Sony's handheld. Rather than adapting a mainline campaign wholesale, Battle Heroes was designed around compact team fights, character-led scenarios, and mission-based play that suited the portable format.

The game turns familiar historical warlords into highly stylized action heroes. Players choose from a roster of 30 warriors drawn from earlier entries, including central figures such as Date Masamune, Sanada Yukimura, and Maeda Keiji. These are fictionalized versions of Sengoku-period people rather than historical simulations: the appeal lies in distinct visual identities, dramatic rivalries, voiced scenes, and extravagant combat techniques. Every playable warrior has story material and scenarios of their own, giving the cast a larger role than a simple selection screen would suggest.

Battle Heroes centers on two-versus-two team combat. A player selects a warrior and a partner, then faces another pair in close-quarters action where attacks, special techniques, positioning, and help from the teammate all matter. The PSP controls translate the series' fast, accessible combat into short bouts, with character-specific skills creating different approaches to offense. Building the Basara gauge allows a powerful special attack, while the team format makes it possible to think about which ally complements a chosen character rather than fighting every battle alone.

Local ad hoc play supports up to four people, so the two-on-two format can become a direct multiplayer contest instead of a solo fight against computer-controlled opponents. Free Battle also lets players arrange matches and adjust combatants, including CPU opponents. This focus on organized duels distinguishes the game from a conventional one-versus-many battlefield campaign, yet it keeps the colourful warriors, dramatic moves, and energetic presentation that define Sengoku Basara action games.

For single-player play, Mission Mode provides up to 150 challenges. Its missions are organized around three battle chronicles associated with Masamune, Yukimura, and Keiji, and include introductory objectives as well as tougher tests. Before setting out, players can choose allies and equip weapons or armor. Equipment can raise a character's fighting strength, but it also affects the cost attached to deployment and the risk of defeat, adding a small layer of preparation to a game otherwise driven by immediate action. Completing missions unlocks further options and encourages experimentation with the cast.

Battle Heroes was released during a busy period for the franchise, shortly before Sengoku Basara 3 expanded the series onto newer home consoles. It remains a PSP-exclusive entry and was not given the broad Western release associated with the later Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes localization. For players exploring Capcom's Japan-focused action catalog, Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes captures an early handheld interpretation of the series: a portable collection of oversized Sengoku personalities, quick team battles, and a large set of missions built around its established heroes.
