About
Saki Portable for PlayStation Portable is a Japanese mahjong game based on the Saki television anime and its manga source. Developed and published by Alchemist, it arrived in Japan on March 25, 2010. Rather than adapting the property as an action game, it puts its high-school mahjong competition at the center, presenting four-player Japanese mahjong alongside the characters, voices, and dramatic presentation associated with the anime. The PSP release is therefore both a board-game adaptation and a character-driven companion to the 2009 animated series.
The central activity is mahjong: players form hands, make calls, and compete for points against computer-controlled opponents or other players. Its characters are not merely visual stand-ins. Many have game-specific ability settings based on their traits in the show, affecting circumstances such as drawing useful tiles. Saki Miyanaga’s power, for example, is tied to drawing a useful rinshan tile after declaring a kan, while Nodoka Haramura has assistance aimed at identifying the best move. These abilities can be turned off with the rules, allowing matches to be played without the character powers and parameters.
Story Mode retells material from the anime, beginning with Saki’s meeting with Nodoka and continuing through the Nagano prefectural tournament’s team final. The familiar Kiyosumi High School group, including Saki, Nodoka, Yuki Kataoka, Hisa Takei, and Mako Someya, provides the player characters, while rival schools supply opponents. Alongside the adaptation, Alchemist created an original side-story for the PSP version that takes place after the prefectural qualifying tournament. This gives the game material beyond a straightforward replay of the broadcast narrative.
Outside Story Mode, Saki Portable includes Challenge Mode, free-play matches, and wireless communication matches. Challenges set particular goals and provide a structured way to engage with its systems, while free matches allow players to select opponents more directly. In the story material, difficulty choices and a support mode make the mahjong sections more approachable for players who know the characters but are less familiar with the game’s rules. During hands, calls and winning moments receive voiced reactions and illustrated cut-ins; the release was promoted as including more than 200 CG images for those scenes.
The game reflects how closely the Saki premise links school life to competitive mahjong. Saki initially approaches the game by maintaining an even score, but her encounter with Nodoka draws her into the Kiyosumi club and its bid for the national high-school championship. Portable turns that setting into a handheld format in which tactical tile play shares space with dialogue scenes, character artwork, and rival encounters. The cast follows the anime’s presentation, including its voice performers, so the game is designed around the particular personalities and styles of its adaptation rather than generic mahjong opponents.
Saki Portable was a Japan-only PSP release, issued in regular and limited editions under the Japanese title Saki -Saki- Portable. Alchemist later made it available digitally on the Japanese PlayStation Store and reissued it in the budget Alche Best line on March 29, 2012. It was followed on PSP by Saki: Achiga-hen episode of Side-A Portable in 2013, while later installments reached PlayStation Vita. For the original anime era, Saki Portable remains a focused conversion of the first series: a portable Japanese-mahjong game that combines an anime retelling, original scenario content, configurable character abilities, and local wireless competition.
