About
Saki Achiga-hen Episode of Side-A Portable is a Japanese PSP mahjong game from Alchemist, released in Japan on August 29, 2013. It follows the Saki Portable game but shifts the focus to Saki: Achiga-hen episode of side-A, the spin-off story set around Achiga Girls' Academy in Nara. The PSP release is a four-player Japanese riichi mahjong game built around the series’ school competitors and their distinctive, dramatized talents at the table.
The game’s story background belongs to Shizuno Takakamo and the revived Achiga mahjong club. Shizuno wants to meet her childhood friend Nodoka Haramura again on the national stage, so she gathers fellow students and pursues the high-school championship. That premise makes Achiga the centre of the package rather than the original Saki cast, while still placing its players in the wider inter-high school competition familiar from the manga and animated adaptation.
Matches use the fundamentals of Japanese mahjong: players draw and discard tiles while working toward completed hands, deciding when to call tiles, declare riichi, or protect a lead. The character roster brings the fiction into those conventional rounds through individual abilities associated with the competitors. These effects activate automatically, so the game combines ordinary tile decisions with the uncertainty of each opponent’s specialized traits. A hand-support feature can identify winning tiles after riichi, providing useful information during a tense finish.
Saki Achiga-hen Episode of Side-A Portable includes more than 30 playable characters, allowing players to assemble tables from the schools represented by the source material. Challenge Mode presents mahjong situations with specified completion conditions, and clearing its tasks unlocks additional characters and costumes. Free matches allow players to choose participants and rules for standalone games, making the handheld release suitable both for short rounds and for experimenting with different lineups.
Local wireless play extends the PSP game beyond its computer-controlled tables. Communication matches can accommodate up to five people when a spectator is included, and an official five-person team competition was held after release. The game was issued in both standard and limited editions, with a download version also announced for Japan. Its opening theme, “Moment of Glory,” was performed by Miyuki Hashimoto, tying this portable mahjong adaptation directly to the Achiga-hen branch of the Saki franchise.
