About

Ys: The Oath in Felghana for PSP is a fast-paced action role-playing game from Nihon Falcom, released in Japan in April 2010 and in North America by XSEED Games on November 2, 2010. It is the PlayStation Portable version of Falcom's 2005 Windows game, itself a far-reaching remake of 1989's Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. Rather than reproducing the original's side-scrolling format, this version presents Adol Christin's Felghana adventure through an elevated 3D action system. It preserves the journey's central setting and characters while rebuilding its areas, battles, story scenes, and progression for a more modern Ys style.

The adventure begins when red-haired traveler Adol and his longtime companion Dogi arrive in Dogi's homeland of Felghana. Their intended visit turns urgent: monsters are appearing outside Redmont, a dormant volcano has become active, and the region's ruler is placing heavy demands on its people. Adol sets out from town to trace the cause of the unrest, visiting dangerous wilderness routes, mines, ruins, mountain paths, and Valestein Castle. The story brings him into contact with Elena Stoddart and her estranged brother Chester, as well as the political and supernatural threat bearing down on Felghana.

Combat takes place directly in the environment, with Adol attacking enemies in real time rather than selecting commands from menus. He can chain sword strikes, jump, attack in midair, and use a downward attack, so movement and positioning matter in both ordinary encounters and platforming sections. Exploration is closely tied to the three elemental bracelets Adol acquires. Their Ring Arts provide different magical attacks and practical traversal tools: fire can affect certain obstacles, wind supports aerial movement, and earth can smash particular barriers. New equipment and bracelet upgrades expand Adol's options as the route through Felghana opens up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana PSP emphasizes momentum. Defeated enemies can leave temporary benefits such as health, magic, experience, attack, or defense boosts, rewarding players who keep fighting before an effect ends. Equipment is built around swords, armor, and shields, while Raval ore can be used to reinforce gear. Boss battles are a major part of the game, asking the player to read attack patterns, make precise jumps, manage space, and choose the right Ring Art. Multiple difficulty settings allow the challenge to be adjusted, and the compact structure keeps the focus on active exploration and demanding encounters instead of a large inventory or party-management system.

The PSP release is distinct from the original Windows edition in several important ways. Falcom added full voice acting to event scenes, an extra opening sequence, and an easier difficulty option for newcomers. It also introduced the double-boost system: after building the gauge, Adol can enter a powered-up state, then activate a second level for stronger benefits that include gradual health recovery. The portable version offers three soundtrack modes, letting players switch between the rearranged score used for the Windows game and versions modeled on the music of earlier Ys III releases. These additions make the PSP game more than a simple conversion of the 2005 release.

As part of the long-running Ys series, The Oath in Felghana revisits one of Adol's early adventures without treating it as a museum piece. Its story still follows the conflict that once defined Ys III, but its gameplay framework follows the action-oriented direction Falcom established with Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. The result is a single-player PSP action RPG built around a defined regional quest, responsive swordplay, elemental movement abilities, and a classic fantasy journey shared by Adol and Dogi. Later releases have revisited the game again, but this PSP edition remains notable for its voice work, double-boost feature, and selectable music arrangements.
