About
Sega Mega Drive Collection PSP is a 2007 compilation from Digital Eclipse and Sega that brings 27 games from Sega’s 16-bit Mega Drive library to Sony’s handheld. Released in North America as Sega Genesis Collection, it spans platform games, role-playing adventures, puzzles, fighting games, shooters and arcade-style action rather than presenting a single series. The UMD is built around the original Mega Drive versions, making it a portable cross-section of Sega’s late-1980s and early-1990s catalogue.
The selection ranges from immediately recognizable games such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to the score-chasing Columns, the comic-book brawler Comix Zone and the multi-stage ninja action of Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Bonanza Bros., DecapAttack, Flicky, Gain Ground, Kid Chameleon, Ristar and Super Thunder Blade add more varieties of platforming, strategy and shooting. Sword of Vermilion supplies a first-person dungeon-crawling role-playing adventure, while Virtua Fighter 2 is the Mega Drive’s 2D interpretation of Sega’s fighting series.
Several franchises receive more than one chapter, which makes the collection useful for seeing how their 16-bit designs changed over time. Players can work through the three Golden Axe fantasy beat-'em-ups, guide dolphin heroes through Ecco Jr., Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time, or take on the science-fiction role-playing stories of Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom and Phantasy Star IV. Vectorman and Vectorman 2 provide run-and-gun action with a robotic protagonist, while the different games retain their own original goals, rules and challenge structure.
Digital Eclipse adapted the package for portable play with a shared front end and helpful modern options. Each game can be saved at any point, useful for longer adventures as well as brief handheld sessions, and players can choose original, fit or wide display settings. The PSP controls support either the directional pad or analogue nub for movement. Compatible titles can also be played through PSP ad hoc multiplayer, covering cooperative and competitive games; Kid Chameleon retains its original alternating two-player format rather than simultaneous play.
Sega Mega Drive Collection PSP encourages exploration beyond the main menu. A museum section gathers box art, concise game information and strategy hints, while completing particular goals unlocks interviews with Sega creators, trailers for Phantasy Star Universe and Virtua Fighter 5, and a cheat sheet. Its five unlockable arcade extras are specific to the PSP edition: Astro Blaster, Eliminator, Space Fury, Super Zaxxon and Tip Top. That bonus set distinguishes the handheld release from the contemporary PlayStation 2 version, even though both editions share the central Mega Drive library.
As a compilation, Sega Mega Drive Collection is best approached as a collection of separate original games rather than a newly made sequel or a remake. The regional Mega Drive and Genesis names reflect Sega’s different branding outside and within North America, not a different core PSP game. It later led into the larger 2009 high-definition sequel known as Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection in North America and Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection in other regions, but this 2007 PSP release remains a distinct portable anthology with its own interface, ad hoc options and arcade unlocks.
