About
X-Men: The Official Game for Nintendo DS is a single-player action game developed by Amaze Entertainment and published by Activision in 2006. Released alongside X-Men: The Last Stand, it is set in the gap between X2 and the third film, placing the mutant team in an original conflict involving Hydra, the Sentinel project, and the threat of Master Mold. Although it shares a title and movie connection with the console and computer editions, the Nintendo DS release is a separately designed game, built around the handheld's dual screens and stylus controls rather than being a direct port.
The action is shown from an isometric, top-down perspective, with 3D character models moving through a campaign of roughly forty missions. The lower screen is the active playfield, while the upper display keeps key information in view, including the current hero, character rotation, health, mutant energy, objectives, and pickups. The Control Pad moves a mutant around the environment, and the face buttons can also be used for movement, allowing players to choose an arrangement that suits either hand while the stylus handles the rest of the action.
Touch input is central to combat. Tapping an opponent locks attacks onto that target, while touching mutant-energy pickups gathers power for special moves. Players must dodge incoming gunfire, flames, and other hazards while deciding which member of the team is best equipped for a particular obstacle or enemy. Wolverine specializes in close-range claw attacks and can break barriers; Iceman fires at range and can reach airborne foes. Their contrasting roles make selecting the right character an important part of pushing through each encounter.
The Nintendo DS version also gives Magneto a playable role, a feature not shared by the main console release. In missions where the player can rotate among Wolverine, Iceman, and Magneto, the Master of Magnetism brings a more physical use of the touch screen: metal objects can be grabbed, moved, used defensively, and hurled at enemies, while metal doors can be opened with his powers. Enemy resistances encourage frequent character changes, so combat is not simply a matter of attacking everything with one hero.
Nightcrawler is handled differently from the rotating trio. His stages focus on the blue mutant's close-quarters fighting and teleportation, and his Bamf ability is used to manipulate time. Across the campaign, the X-Men face ordinary hostile forces as well as boss encounters, following a story that sends them from the aftermath of Alkali Lake toward a larger Sentinel crisis. The game draws on familiar film-universe figures and situations while telling an adventure designed to lead into the events of X-Men: The Last Stand.
For the Nintendo DS, X-Men: The Official Game stands out within the 2006 multi-platform release for making the stylus its primary action tool. Its independent structure, character switching, and separate playable Magneto give it a different identity from the versions on home consoles, PC, and Game Boy Advance. It is a compact Marvel action adventure for players interested in an X-Men story between the second and third films and in a DS interpretation that pairs movement on the buttons with target selection and powers on the touch screen.
