LEGO Star Wars II : The Original Trilogy

2006 · Traveller's Tales · Action-Adventure · 1-2 players

About

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy for PSP is Traveller's Tales' 2006 action-adventure retelling of the three classic Star Wars films: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Published by LucasArts, it follows the 2005 LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game but shifts the focus from the prequel era to Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and the Rebel Alliance's struggle against the Galactic Empire. The PlayStation Portable edition brings the series' brick-built sets, wordless slapstick scenes, and accessible exploration to Sony's handheld in a release built around the familiar worlds of Tatooine, Hoth, Bespin, the Death Star, Endor, and beyond.

Each story chapter turns a key moment from the films into a third-person LEGO adventure. Players smash scenery into collectible studs, defeat enemies, solve light environmental puzzles, and assemble loose pieces into useful objects such as bridges, switches, and machinery. The stories are presented through comic visual gags rather than spoken dialogue, letting the blocky cast reinterpret famous scenes while the game moves from one cinematic location to the next. Story Mode supplies the characters appropriate to each sequence and opens the route through the trilogy one level at a time.

Character abilities shape the puzzles and give the game its replay value. Jedi and Sith characters can use the Force and deflect blaster fire with lightsabers, while blaster users can reach designated points with grappling hooks. Droids access special panels and doors, small characters can fit through narrow passages, and certain bounty hunters can break obstacles that other characters cannot. Once a level has been completed, Free Play permits a return with unlocked characters, making it possible to revisit stages, reach previously inaccessible secrets, and approach familiar scenes with an entirely different toolset.

The Mos Eisley cantina serves as the PSP game's central hub. From there, players choose story chapters, spend collected studs on characters, vehicles, hints, and extra options, and view unlocked scenes. Levels hide minikit pieces that combine into LEGO vehicles, along with power bricks that unlock purchasable gameplay modifiers. Gold bricks reward major milestones and collection progress, so completion is not limited to simply reaching the end credits. Vehicle-focused sequences add another pace to the on-foot platforming, with Star Wars craft used in missions inspired by the films' chases and battles.

The PSP version is notable for offering two-player play through the system's local ad hoc wireless connection. Two handhelds can create or join a session from the cantina, allowing a pair of players to work through the adventure together without a home console. It does not support PSP Game Sharing, and its cantina handles unlocked characters differently from some other editions, but it retains the broad character collection and the mix of Story and Free Play that defines the release. The game originally shipped on UMD and required PSP system software version 2.71 or later.

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy arrived during the early growth of Traveller's Tales' LEGO game formula, refining ideas introduced by its predecessor while using the original Star Wars trilogy as its source. The combination of cooperative action, collectible-driven replay, character-specific puzzles, and playful visual comedy established patterns that later LEGO adaptations would develop further. It was subsequently paired with the first LEGO Star Wars in LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, but the 2006 PSP game remains the portable version of the original-trilogy adventure, with its own local wireless feature and handheld presentation.
