About
7th Dragon 2020-II is a single-player PlayStation Portable role-playing game developed by Imageepoch and published by Sega in Japan on April 18, 2013. It is the direct follow-up to 7th Dragon 2020, shifting the series' dragon-hunting premise into a near-future Tokyo rather than the fantasy setting of the original Nintendo DS game. Set in 2021, one year after Murakumo's earlier victory, the story begins when dragons threaten Tokyo again. Players join the government special agency Murakumo, an organization whose exceptional members can confront the invaders, and set out to hunt the dragons standing between humanity and survival.
The adventure is built around a custom party. At the start, players create three Murakumo members, combining an appearance, color variation, class, name, and voice. Sega advertised 5,040 possible combinations: 14 appearances with three colors apiece, six classes, and 40 selectable voices. Those choices are not only cosmetic once a class is selected, since a party's abilities and tactics grow from its makeup. The game lets players arrange a team to suit their preferred approach before taking that group into Tokyo's dragon-infested areas.
Combat uses command selections and presents the party's actions through animated 3D character models. Murakumo's six classes cover contrasting roles, allowing a group to mix direct attacks, recovery, enemy disruption, and support. A Samurai balances offense and defense by working between its drawn-sword and iaijutsu stances, while a Psychic combines elemental techniques with healing. The Hacker specializes in aiding allies and impairing enemies, including hacking foes and using traps. New to this sequel is the Idol, a low-attack support class whose Order skills can grant allies additional actions; its commands make timing and coordination within a three-person party especially important.
Tokyo itself supplies the game's modern-apocalypse backdrop. The returning invasion has transformed familiar districts into dangerous destinations, including a massive Roppongi building made into a dungeon by the dragons' arrival. Missions send Murakumo members after dragons throughout the city, while the larger campaign asks them to overcome the seven dragons that have come from outer space. This continuing scenario makes 2020-II a sequel rather than a remake or port: it follows the PSP game's earlier conflict and develops the renewed crisis in the following year.
The presentation also connects the RPG to Sega's broader creative collaboration around the 2020 titles. Character designs are by Shirow Miwa, Yuzo Koshiro composed the regular music, and sasakure.UK created the opening song, performed by Hatsune Miku as the in-game persona Hatsune Miku TYPE2021. Miku appears as a non-player character, and meeting the relevant in-game condition unlocks DIVA Mode. That optional setting switches the ordinary background music to vocal arrangements sung by Hatsune Miku, with songs contributed by multiple artists. Alongside the expanded character creator and the Idol class, it gives 7th Dragon 2020-II a distinct identity within the 7th Dragon series while retaining its focused PSP RPG campaign.
