About
Spider-Man 2 is a single-player action game for Nintendo DS, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. It reached North America in November 2004 as an early DS release, and was built specifically for the new handheld rather than ported from the console game.
Its story takes the 2004 Spider-Man 2 film as a starting point. Peter Parker must balance his life with his work as Spider-Man while Otto Octavius becomes Doctor Octopus; the campaign also brings Mysterio and the Vulture into its encounters beyond the film's central conflict.
This version is a linear chapter-based adventure, not the console editions' open-world Manhattan. Most stages are side-scrolling action areas that bend through 3D environments: Spider-Man follows a two-dimensional route while the camera and scenery can rotate around him, with occasional fully 3D sequences.
Spider-Man can run, jump, wall-crawl, web-swing, and shoot webs at walls to pull himself across a stage. His movement supports exploring vertically arranged rooms and reaching objectives, while web-swinging is handled as a quick repeated traversal move rather than the physics-driven city swinging of the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox game.
Combat uses dedicated punches, kicks, web attacks, and unlockable special moves. Spider-Sense can slow the action during a fight, and later abilities include web-based throws, projectiles, and sliding attacks, giving encounters with thugs and supervillains more options than basic melee.
Missions mix enemy clear-outs with rescues, searches for hostages or objects, timed hazards, bomb-related objectives, and boss battles. Some stages reward replay and faster completion with grades and bonus objectives, but their maze-like layouts and time limits make locating every target an important part of the challenge.
The touchscreen is used chiefly to select special moves and during certain 3D boss moments, when the player taps incoming debris to knock it away. These stylus sequences complement the D-pad-and-button action without changing the game into a dual-screen free-roaming adventure.
Spider-Man 2 on DS is therefore a distinct hybrid 2D/3D beat-'em-up. It shares the movie tie-in's characters and premise with other 2004 versions, but its Vicarious Visions-built campaign, pseudo-3D presentation, touchscreen interactions, and stage-based progression set it apart from both the console game and the separate Game Boy Advance release.
