About
Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo: Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu is a Nintendo DS tactical role-playing game from Intelligent Systems, published by Nintendo in Japan on July 15, 2010. Known in English as Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, it revisits the second half of the 1994 Super Famicom game Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem. This Japanese-exclusive adventure returns to the continent of Archanea and follows Prince Marth after the events retold in the DS game Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.
The campaign is played through turn-based battles on grid maps. Players direct Marth's army one unit at a time, judging movement range, terrain, weapon choice, and the order in which to meet enemy forces. Swords, axes, and lances follow the familiar Weapon Triangle, so a strong position is only part of a sound plan. Victories earn experience, improve units through level-ups, and make it possible to develop a varied army rather than relying on one type of fighter.
Each character has a class that shapes how they move and which weapons they can use. Fighters can later promote with a Master Seal, opening stronger forms of established roles. The adventure also asks players to choose a limited group for each map from a much larger recruitable cast, making the roster-management side of Fire Emblem as important as a single attack. Between chapters, preparations allow the army to buy supplies and arrange equipment before returning to the battlefield.
New Mystery of the Emblem frames Marth's war through an original customizable Avatar character, conventionally named Kris. Players select details including the Avatar's gender, appearance, class, and starting strengths. The Avatar begins among Altea's recruits, where a friendship with the mysterious Katarina becomes part of a plot involving assassins targeting Marth. As Archanea's political order worsens under Emperor Hardin, Kris becomes Marth's bodyguard and joins the effort to uncover the influence behind the conflict and the threat of the revived dark dragon Medeus.
The DS remake adds a prologue and side chapters alongside the central story, while support conversations give many allies additional dialogue and battlefield benefits. It also includes New Archanea Chronicles, four episodes adapted from the Satellaview game BS Fire Emblem. These extras broaden a version of Archanea that had previously been tied to older Nintendo hardware, while the new Avatar provides a personal viewpoint within a story led by Marth.
Players can choose between Classic Mode, where a unit lost in battle is gone for the rest of the campaign, and Casual Mode, where defeated units return for the next map. Separate difficulty settings offer further control over the challenge. Nintendo listed the game for one player, with two-player wireless and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection features; its online options included battles, unit sharing, and an in-game shop. The Nintendo DS presentation preserves the series' map-based strategy while adding features intended to make its Archanea remake more flexible for different players.
Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo: Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu was the second Fire Emblem remake released for Nintendo DS, following Shadow Dragon. It remained exclusive to Japan, making it a notable entry for bringing the Mystery of the Emblem storyline back in a new form rather than receiving an official release abroad. For players exploring Marth's era of Fire Emblem, it connects the original Archanea campaign, its Super Famicom continuation, and material once released separately for the Satellaview service.
