About
FIFA 08 Nintendo DS brings EA Sports’ long-running football series to Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld. Released in Europe in September 2007 and in North America as FIFA Soccer 08 on October 9, the game was developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label. It is a licensed association-football game built around club and international matches, giving portable players a season-era selection of real teams, leagues and players.
On the pitch, the aim is the familiar one: move the ball through midfield, create a scoring chance and outscore the opposition before the final whistle. Players direct a team with the DS buttons, passing, shooting, tackling and positioning as a match develops. The compact format adapts FIFA’s full-field sport to handheld play, while the game’s licensed squads and kits frame individual fixtures as recognisable football contests rather than fictional stand-ins.
The Nintendo DS version makes particular use of the system’s touch screen for set pieces. Free kicks and penalties ask players to use the stylus to choose and shape an attempt, while defensive situations can hand responsibility to the goalkeeper for important saves. Goalkeeper positioning at corners and control around free kicks add another layer of decision-making when a match turns on a single delivery or shot.
FIFA 08 offers more than a straightforward exhibition match. Its selection of modes includes Kick Off, Penalty Shootout, Training, Tournament and Manager Mode, as well as Scenarios that let players set up football situations of their own. These options support quick matches, practice sessions and longer competition-focused play, letting a player approach the game as a squad manager, a tournament participant or simply one half of a local rivalry.
The DS edition was tailored to a smaller cartridge and portable hardware, so it was not a direct copy of its home-console counterparts. Even so, Electronic Arts promoted a broad licensed lineup of 30 complete leagues and more than 14,000 real players for the handheld release. It also originally supported Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection matches, letting players challenge friends or opponents at a distance, alongside the handheld’s wireless multiplayer possibilities.
As the fourth FIFA game released for Nintendo DS, FIFA 08 sits within the series’ effort to make an annual global football package work on the system. Its combination of licensed clubs, international sides, touch-screen set pieces, manager-oriented options and portable match play gives it a distinct identity beside the same year’s versions on other platforms. For players looking for a 2007-era FIFA experience designed around the Nintendo DS, it preserves the season’s teams and the series’ familiar match-day structure in a handheld form.
