About
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for Nintendo DS is a 2009 crossover sports game from SEGA, built around the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It brings Nintendo’s Mario cast and SEGA’s Sonic characters together for an officially licensed winter-sports competition, following the pair’s earlier Olympic Games outing. Released in North America in October 2009, the handheld edition turns the Olympic setting into a collection of quick events as well as a more structured adventure tailored to the DS.
The main Olympic events put a chosen character into winter disciplines such as Alpine skiing and speed skating. Characters have different attributes, so selecting an athlete suited to a challenge is part of preparing for each event. The Nintendo DS hardware gives the game a mixed control approach: many contests use the face buttons and directional controls, while others call on the stylus and touch screen. The result is a varied set of short challenges centered on timing, steering, racing, and pursuing medals.
Beyond its standard Olympic competitions, the game includes Dream Events that reinterpret winter sports with settings and ideas drawn from the Mario and Sonic worlds. Familiar competitors return from the first Mario & Sonic Olympic game, while Donkey Kong, Bowser Jr., Silver the Hedgehog, and Metal Sonic join the playable roster. That broad cast makes the game a meeting point for two long-running series, with individual character strengths providing another reason to try events with different selections.
The Nintendo DS release is particularly distinguished by Adventure Tours, a mode not shared in the same form by the Wii version. Bowser and Dr. Eggman disrupt the approach to the Games by taking the Snow Spirits, and players travel through snowy areas while completing events, clearing quests, and opening routes. This gives the collection a campaign-like thread in addition to its pick-up-and-play contests, connecting competition progress to the effort to restore the winter setting.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games also supports competition away from the single-player modes. Up to four players can take part through the Nintendo DS’s local wireless features, and DS Download Play lets nearby systems join compatible multiplayer sessions without every participant needing a separate game card. Online features included rankings through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection when the service was active. Whether played for the Adventure Tours story or for short multiplayer contests, this DS entry adapts the Mario and Sonic crossover to a portable winter Olympics format.
