About
Cave Story is a side-scrolling action-adventure for Nintendo DSiWare, adapted by Nicalis from Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s 2004 independent PC game. This 2010 handheld release keeps the original’s pixel-art presentation and score while bringing its self-contained journey to the DSi.
Players guide Quote, an amnesiac robot who awakens in a cave beneath a floating island. His search for a way out leads to Mimiga Village, a settlement of rabbit-like inhabitants threatened by the Doctor and the violent effects of the island’s red flowers. Encounters with characters including Sue Sakamoto, Curly Brace, Balrog and Professor Booster gradually reveal the island’s history.
Exploration is structured around connected areas filled with platforms, hazards, locked routes and bosses. New equipment opens paths that could not be crossed earlier, so progress mixes precise jumping and shooting with conversation, item use and returning to previously visited locations.
Quote can carry several firearms and switch between them while moving through the caves. Defeated enemies may leave weapon-experience crystals, health pickups or missile ammunition; collecting crystals raises a weapon through three levels, while taking damage can reduce its power. Permanent health and ammunition upgrades reward careful exploration.
The campaign’s choices and optional discoveries affect what the player sees and which ending is reached. Some opportunities can be missed, giving repeat runs a reason to follow different routes and pursue the game’s more demanding conclusion.
This DSiWare edition is a portable version of Cave Story rather than the later 3D remake or the more extensively expanded Cave Story+ release. It includes a Jukebox for listening to the soundtrack and the unlockable Sanctuary Attack challenge, which focuses on completing the game’s toughest final area under time pressure.
Cave Story was created over several years by Amaya, who developed the original game under the Studio Pixel name. Its DSiWare release preserves the brisk, sprite-based action and exploratory design that made the freeware original widely known, while presenting it as a single-player Nintendo download.
