About

Cars for Nintendo DS is a 2006 racing game based on Disney and Pixar's film of the same name. Developed by Helixe and published by THQ, this handheld adaptation casts Lightning McQueen in a new Piston Cup season as he tries to get the better of returning rival Chick Hicks. It arrived in North America in June 2006, shortly after the film's release, while Japan received it as カーズ in July.

Rather than reproducing the roaming 3D structure used by the home-console editions, Cars on DS is built around a compact selection of races and challenges. Racing is viewed from above, giving courses and competitors a distinctly portable, arcade-style presentation. The goal is to guide Lightning through the events associated with the championship and work toward competition in the Piston Cup.

The Nintendo DS version also makes its own use of the system's dual-screen hardware. It includes 12 mini-games designed around touch-panel input, shifting the action away from standard races for quick challenges involving the film's automotive cast. These activities sit alongside the driving events, giving the game a broader mix of short-form play than a straightforward single-discipline racer.

Cars keeps its focus on the world and characters established by the 2006 movie, with Lightning's pursuit of the Piston Cup providing the central thread. Chick Hicks remains the principal rival, while familiar Radiator Springs characters are part of the game's set of challenges and activities. The structure makes the license accessible in brief sessions as players move between races and touch-controlled diversions.

This is a separate Nintendo DS interpretation of Cars, not a scaled-down version of the console adventure-racing game. Helixe tailored it for the handheld with top-down racing and DS-specific mini-games, and it supports head-to-head play between two systems through local wireless connection. For players looking for a 2006 Disney-Pixar game made specifically around the DS's controls, it offers a focused Piston Cup-themed take on Lightning McQueen's world.
