About
Burnout Legends for Nintendo DS is a 2005 arcade racing game developed by Visual Impact and published by Electronic Arts. It brings the Burnout series' high-speed, collision-heavy style to Nintendo's dual-screen handheld, drawing its selection of cars, roads and event ideas from Burnout, Burnout 2: Point of Impact and Burnout 3: Takedown. Rather than presenting a new entry with a single campaign premise, this DS version packages recognizable material from those early games into a portable progression built around speed, risk and spectacular wrecks.
Races reward more than simply crossing the finish line first. Players build boost by driving aggressively: threading close to traffic, taking risky lines, drifting and forcing rivals into crashes all contribute to the series' danger-driven rhythm. The resulting boost gives a burst of speed that can turn a close contest or help a driver recover ground. Takedowns remain a central tactic, asking players to use traffic, barriers and opposing cars to knock a rival out of the race while keeping their own vehicle moving.
World Tour is the main single-player route through Burnout Legends on Nintendo DS. It begins with the Compact class and opens additional cars, events and locations as medals and Grand Prix results are earned. Progress moves through Compact, Muscle, Coupe, Sport and Super divisions, giving the career structure even though individual events are designed for short handheld sessions. Single Event provides a way to select unlocked challenges directly, while different vehicle classes give the roster a clear sense of escalation as the tour advances.
The event list includes straightforward Race and time-based challenges as well as variants that put destruction at the forefront. Road Rage measures how effectively a player can score takedowns before time runs out, while Pursuit casts the player as a police vehicle trying to stop racers. Face-Off events pit the player against a particular rival vehicle, and Eliminator races remove the last-place car after each lap. Crash mode changes the objective completely: instead of protecting a finishing position, the player launches into traffic to create a costly chain reaction and chase a high score.
The DS adaptation is built around the system's directional controls and is designed for both solo play and local wireless competition. Multiplayer supports up to four players, with races and other competitive events extending the emphasis on taking down opponents. It also includes Nintendo DS Multi-Card play for larger groups and a two-player option that can use a single game card, making it possible to share a quick contest without every participant owning a copy.
Burnout Legends occupies a distinctive place in the early Burnout catalog because it is a handheld collection rather than a direct conversion of one console installment. The original PSP edition was developed by Criterion Games, whereas Visual Impact handled the Nintendo DS version; that distinction matters when comparing the two releases. For DS players in 2005, the game offered a portable route into the series' defining mix of arcade racing, boost management, rival takedowns and Crash events, while revisiting material associated with Burnout's first three games.
