About
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for Nintendo DS is a 2009 open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar Leeds with Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Set in the modern, fictional Liberty City, it brings the series’ criminal underworld to a handheld in a purpose-built story rather than a cut-down port. The game follows Huang Lee, a young Triad member sent to deliver the Yu Jian, a family sword inherited after his father’s murder. When attackers steal the heirloom and leave Huang for dead, his search for it draws him into rivalries and corruption within the city’s Triad organization.
Liberty City is presented from a high, adjustable camera angle that recalls the early Grand Theft Auto games while keeping the world fully 3D. Huang can travel the city on foot, take vehicles, accept jobs, collect equipment, and pursue story missions across a compact rendition of the Grand Theft Auto IV setting; Alderney is absent. The basic rhythm alternates between driving through traffic, navigating to a contact or objective, and handling confrontations with gangs, police, or other threats. A PDA provides a map, communication, and access to useful services, helping turn the two-screen hardware into part of the game’s day-to-day navigation.
The Nintendo DS edition was designed around its controls. Buttons and the directional pad handle movement, driving, weapons, and actions, while the Touch Screen supports maps, menus, aiming certain thrown weapons, and hands-on activities. Depending on the situation, the stylus may be used to start a car, disable an obstacle, assemble a weapon, or manage other short interactive tasks. The microphone can be used to hail a taxi, with a button alternative available. These touches make the DS version distinct without changing the central Grand Theft Auto mix of free roaming, missions, driving, and combat.
Crime-system details give its chases a different flavor from Grand Theft Auto IV. Rather than simply escaping a marked area, Huang can reduce a wanted level by destroying pursuing police vehicles, one for each star removed. Optional pursuits include finding and destroying security cameras and working with a citywide trade system in which prices vary between suppliers and dealers. These activities sit alongside the main story and encourage players to learn neighborhoods, travel efficiently, and decide when to risk attention from the police. The game is single-player at its core, while the DS cartridge also includes competitive and cooperative local wireless multiplayer modes for nearby systems.
Chinatown Wars uses cel-shaded, black-outlined visuals and comic-book-like story scenes that suit the Nintendo DS hardware while separating it from the console look of Grand Theft Auto IV. Its March 2009 DS release was followed by a PlayStation Portable version later that year, then touch-screen mobile releases; the PSP version revised the presentation and adapted the DS-specific interactions for buttons. For the Nintendo DS, though, the appeal is the combination of an original Liberty City crime story, a dense open-world structure, and features shaped specifically for a dual-screen portable.
