About
Backyard Baseball ’09 brings the kid-focused Backyard Sports take on baseball to Nintendo DS. Atari published the North American DS release on March 25, 2008, while Mistic Software developed this handheld version. It pairs arcade-style games with Major League Baseball licensing, presenting real pros as children alongside the series’ fictional Backyard Kids.
The roster includes youthful versions of MLB players such as David “Big Papi” Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki, Ken Griffey Jr., and Albert Pujols. Players can choose an MLB or Backyard team, assemble a custom team, and create a player, making lineup selection part of the experience rather than simply picking a fixed club.
At the plate, on the mound, on the bases, and in the field, the DS game is built around touch-screen input: stylus strokes and taps are used to hit, pitch, run, and make defensive plays. The two screens divide the action and information, with a top-down field radar on the upper screen to help track the ball and fielding situation while the game unfolds below.
Season mode provides the longer team-management route, while a single-game or pickup option supports a quicker match. Home Run Derby shifts the emphasis to hitting for distance, and Fielder’s Challenge spotlights defense. The game also includes power-ups and unlockables, giving its simplified baseball format a deliberately exaggerated Backyard Sports character.
Nintendo DS players can use wireless multiplayer, so the touch-driven baseball action is not limited to solo play. Across its modes, the game mixes batting, pitching, baserunning, and fielding with team and player customization, translating the series’ approachable youth-league presentation to the handheld’s stylus and dual-screen setup.
