About

Zone of the Enders for PlayStation 2 is Konami's 2001 action game about high-speed Orbital Frame combat. Set in the year 2172, it begins on Antilia, a colony orbiting Jupiter, when the military organization BAHRAM attacks in search of advanced combat machines. Teenager Leo Stenbuck survives the assault and discovers Jehuty, an exceptionally powerful Orbital Frame. With the machine's onboard intelligence, A.D.A., as his guide, Leo becomes an unwilling pilot caught between the battle around the colony and his own reluctance to take lives.

The game is built around third-person fights in broad, three-dimensional arenas. Jehuty can hover and fly in every direction, lock on to hostile Frames, fire energy shots from a distance, and close in with an energy blade. Booster movement gives battles their rapid, evasive rhythm, while defensive options and the ability to seize and throw opponents add more ways to react at close range. Defeated enemies supply experience, allowing Jehuty to improve as the campaign advances, and the frame's capabilities expand through collectible programs and sub-weapons.

Leo's route through Antilia links combat encounters with objectives that make the colony itself matter. Missions can place civilians and buildings in danger, so reckless attacks may cause collateral damage even when the immediate enemy threat is cleared. Metatron Ore restores Jehuty's health, encouraging players to search the areas they enter, while calls from the United Nations Space Force vessel Atlantis keep the goal of delivering Jehuty away from BAHRAM in view. The conflict introduces allies including Elena Weinberg and Leo's friend Celvice Klein, as well as rivals such as the persistent Orbital Frame pilot Viola and BAHRAM commander Nohman.

Zone of the Enders uses its PlayStation 2 hardware to emphasize sweeping motion: Jehuty darts over streets, through colony structures, and across open combat spaces while the camera tracks duels between giant machines. Its mecha designs were created by Yoji Shinkawa, whose work also helped give the series a distinctive silhouette. After completing the story, players can unlock a Versus mode for battles between two Frames, playable against computer opponents or another player locally. The mode presents the same fast lock-on combat in a more direct competitive setting.

This first Zone of the Enders established the setting and technology later continued by Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, while the related Game Boy Advance title The Fist of Mars explored another part of the series. The original PlayStation 2 game was also included with a preview of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in its initial Western release, a notable part of its launch-era identity. For players interested in early PlayStation 2 action games, Zone of the Enders remains a focused science-fiction adventure centered on maneuvering Jehuty through a beleaguered space colony and protecting its people from an escalating mech assault.
