About

XIII for PlayStation 2 is a first-person shooter from Ubisoft, released in November 2003. It adapts the opening volumes of Jean Van Hamme and William Vance’s Franco-Belgian comic series into a modern political-thriller game, using an unmistakable cel-shaded look to suggest inked panels in motion. The story begins when a wounded man washes up on a New England beach with no memory, a Roman-numeral tattoo, and evidence that appears to tie him to the assassination of the President of the United States.

Playing as the amnesiac known as XIII, players pursue an identity that may not be their own while escaping killers, federal agents, and a much larger conspiracy. The campaign moves through locations including city buildings, military installations, mountain terrain, and secluded compounds. Flashbacks, interrogations, and chance discoveries gradually connect XIII to General Carrington, Major Jones, the presumed assassin Steve Rowland, and the shadowy organization behind the attempted coup. Its story follows ideas from the comic rather than reproducing every event exactly, giving the game its own suspenseful route through the mystery.

The PlayStation 2 game is built around first-person gunplay but regularly adds stealth-oriented objectives. XIII can use firearms ranging from pistols and rifles to heavier automatic weapons, while quieter encounters can favor a knife, crossbow, or a careful takedown. Everyday objects can also be picked up and used as improvised weapons. Health items, protective equipment, and ammunition are found in the environments, encouraging players to search rooms and adjust their approach when a direct firefight is not the safest option.

Several tools make the investigative escape feel different from a purely linear shooter. Lock picks open selected doors, a grappling hook reaches certain higher routes, and the hero can take an opponent hostage as a human shield. A visual and audio awareness cue helps identify nearby enemies through walls, supporting ambushes and cautious movement. Bodies can be concealed after silent attacks, while comic-book frames interrupt the action to highlight major moments, clues, and dramatic shots. Sound-effect words and split-panel cutaways reinforce the source material’s graphic-novel character without turning the game into a traditional comic adaptation.

XIII PS2 also includes competitive multiplayer options alongside the single-player campaign. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag provide familiar contest formats, while The Hunt turns one player into a target that becomes harder to hit as the round develops. Power Up, a PS2-specific variation on Deathmatch, places temporary advantages around the arena to help alter the balance of a match. The version supports two-player split-screen play and was released with online multiplayer functionality, giving the game a social counterpart to its conspiracy-driven solo story.

Ubisoft developed and published the original XIII across several platforms in 2003, though platform versions did not all share the same features or development credits. The PS2 release belongs to the original Ubisoft production, not the later remake or the separate mobile and hidden-object follow-ups. Its bold cel shading, comic-panel presentation, and voice cast—led by David Duchovny as XIII, with Eve as Jones and Adam West as Carrington—make this PlayStation 2 shooter a distinctive early-2000s interpretation of a European thriller comic.
