About
Warriors Orochi for PlayStation 2 is Koei's 2007 hack-and-slash crossover between Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. Developed by Omega Force and published by Koei, it brings figures from the Three Kingdoms era of China together with warriors from Japan's Sengoku period in the first entry of the Warriors Orochi series. The PS2 release arrived in Japan in March 2007 and in North America in September, presenting a large-scale action game in which one fighter can cut through an army while commanding a hand-picked team.
The story begins when Orochi, the Serpent King, tears open time and space and creates a distorted world for his own test of strength. Chinese officers and Japanese warlords who belong to different centuries find themselves caught in the same conflict. Separate story routes follow the Shu, Wei, Wu, and Samurai sides as allies are rescued, rival factions are confronted, and resistance to Orochi takes shape. Familiar figures such as Zhao Yun, Cao Cao's forces, the Sun family, Nobunaga Oda, Shingen Takeda, and Kenshin Uesugi are recast in a shared fantasy campaign rather than a retelling of either series' history.
Its defining system is the three-person battle team. Before a stage, players choose three characters from the combined roster, then switch the active warrior during combat. The inactive two recover health and Musou energy, giving team selection a practical role alongside the spectacle of defeating formations of soldiers, officers, and base defenders. Losing the warrior currently in action still ends the battle, so swapping at the right time is as important as building an effective lineup. The PlayStation 2 version also supports split-screen cooperative play, with the second player joining the same team.
Warriors Orochi combines the foundations of Dynasty Warriors 5 and Samurai Warriors 2 while reorganizing the cast into Power, Technique, and Speed classes. Power characters favor forceful attacks, Technique characters have counter-oriented options, and Speed characters move quickly and can use aerial mobility. Every character has an Enhanced Strike, and the familiar attack strings, charge attacks, Musou attacks, mounts, and battlefield objectives are adapted for the crossover. The result gives the many weapon styles in the roster a shared framework while preserving differences between individual officers.
Progression continues beyond clearing the story. Stages can be revisited in Free Mode, and battles reward weapons and growth resources for the Weapon Fusion system. Players can use spare weapons to transfer or improve attributes on a weapon they intend to keep, encouraging experimentation with a favorite character's equipment. Abilities can also be equipped within a limit, while higher difficulties and demanding objectives provide reasons to return to completed maps. The game includes dozens of playable warriors drawn from both parent series, plus Orochi and Da Ji as original additions to the crossover.
On PS2, Warriors Orochi stands as the starting point for a series that turned Koei's two historical action lines into a single supernatural setting. Its crossover premise lets Chinese and Japanese heroes who would never meet in history fight on the same side, and its team-switching structure distinguishes it from the one-character focus of the games it combines. Later releases reached Xbox 360, PSP, and Windows, but this PlayStation 2 version is the original home release for the complete first Warriors Orochi campaign and its cooperative battlefield action.
