About

Twisted Metal: Black is a PlayStation 2 vehicular-combat game released in North America in June 2001. Developed by Incog Inc. Entertainment and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, it is the fifth main Twisted Metal game and a dark reintroduction of the series after its original PlayStation run. Rather than treating cars as racing machines, it turns them into armed combatants in a violent contest arranged by the enigmatic Calypso. Players choose a driver and vehicle, enter an arena, and fight until the opposing competitors have been eliminated.

The central loop is direct but demanding: steer through sprawling 3D environments, seek out weapon pickups, and use them before rival drivers can reduce the chosen vehicle to scrap. Each machine has its own balance of armor, speed, handling, and special attack, so the ice-cream-truck menace Sweet Tooth, the nimble motorcycle rider Mr. Grimm, and larger vehicles such as Darkside invite different approaches. A standard machine gun is always available but can overheat, while collected missiles, explosives, and other armaments provide the heavier firepower. Health stations, turbo boosts, sharp turns, mines, shields, and other command-input abilities make positioning and timing as important as aiming.

Story mode gives the battles a character-specific frame. The competitors are presented as troubled figures drawn into Calypso's tournament, each pursuing a personal wish and receiving an ending tied to that ambition. Advancing requires surviving successive encounters across a set of arenas, with the vehicle and driver selected at the start determining the special weapon and story path. For less structured sessions, Challenge mode lets players stage an individual fight, while Endurance mode asks one vehicle to withstand a continuing stream of enemies. The game also includes local split-screen multiplayer, allowing the arena combat to become a head-to-head or cooperative session instead of a solo campaign.

Its locations are built for destructive driving rather than orderly circuits. Battles can unfold on streets, highways, rooftops, a prison ship, and an expansive suburban level with areas to explore and hazards to exploit. Scenery is frequently breakable, and damage to the environment can expose routes or change the immediate battlefield. The resulting arenas reward learning where weapons, repairs, cover, and shortcuts are located. Vehicles are not interchangeable avatars: their distinct statistics and unique specials encourage players to tailor their movement and weapon choices to the character they have brought into the tournament.

Twisted Metal: Black marked the first PlayStation 2 outing for a franchise that had helped establish console car combat in the 1990s. Incog included people associated with SingleTrac, the studio behind the first two Twisted Metal games, and Black returned the series to that lineage while adopting a markedly harsher visual and narrative tone. It was also the first Twisted Metal release in PAL territories since Twisted Metal 2, although the European edition omitted the Story mode FMV sequences. Sony later issued a multiplayer-focused Twisted Metal: Black Online variant for the PS2, which is separate from the original single-player-and-local-multiplayer game.

For PlayStation 2 players, Twisted Metal: Black remains a focused example of arena-based vehicle combat: select a distinctive machine, learn its strengths, collect the right weapons, and survive a hostile map full of rival drivers. Its combination of character endings, destructive arenas, pickup-based battles, and fast mechanical choices gives it a specific place within the Twisted Metal series. The original PS2 game was subsequently made available through later PlayStation digital releases, but its identity is rooted in the 2001 console version and its self-contained tournament of armed vehicles.
