About
Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for PlayStation 2 is a skateboarding game published by Activision in 2007. It is the ninth main entry in the Tony Hawk series and was developed for PS2 by Page 44 Studios, rather than by Neversoft, which handled the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions. The PS2 release turns the series' familiar trick-scoring foundation into a campaign about earning a place in professional skateboarding, with an emphasis on building a skater's reputation across East Coast locations.
Play centers on navigating ramps, rails, ledges, banks, and street obstacles while joining flips, grabs, grinds, manuals, reverts, and aerial moves into high-value combinations. The standard Tony Hawk control approach rewards route planning as much as individual tricks: a player can carry a combo across different terrain, balance during grinds and manuals, and bank the score by landing cleanly. Characters can gain attributes as they progress, improving the tools available for tackling tougher goals and more demanding score targets.
The story is organized around three approaches to skating: Career, Hardcore, and Rigger. These strands offer different goal types and let players shape the path taken by their created skater, whether that means pursuing contests and sponsored-skater ambitions, concentrating on technical challenges, or working with skate-spot construction. The action visits Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.; on PlayStation 2, the locations are divided into selectable areas instead of forming the single uninterrupted world used on the higher-powered PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
A major feature carried into the PS2 version is Nail the Trick, the slow-motion, dual-analog control system introduced in Tony Hawk's Project 8. It gives players more direct control over the board while airborne. Proving Ground expands that idea with Nail the Grab, allowing more precise grab variations and finger-flip-style board manipulation. The game also includes systems such as Aggro Kick for extra momentum, alongside the series' established transitions, special tricks, and score-building disciplines. However, this PS2 version does not include Nail the Manual, bowl-skating, or the Mod Tool found in the PS3 and Xbox 360 releases.
Beyond Story Mode, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground on PS2 offers Classic Mode challenges that return to the timed, goal-driven style associated with the early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. Each area also provides arcade-style score and Classic activities, giving players reasons to revisit familiar terrain after campaign objectives are complete. That mix of structured progression, character development, and score chasing makes the PlayStation 2 edition a distinct late-era entry: it shares the setting and central ideas of Proving Ground while adapting them to the hardware and design of its own version.
