About
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 first-person tactical shooter from Ubisoft Shanghai, published by Ubisoft. Often called GRAW, it moves the Ghost Recon series into a near-future crisis: Captain Scott Mitchell leads the elite Ghosts through a destabilized Mexico City in 2013. A summit between North American leaders is shattered by a coup, and Mitchell's unit is drawn into a campaign involving endangered heads of state, insurgent forces, and a stolen communications device.
The PS2 edition is not simply the same game as the better-known Xbox 360 or Windows releases. It is a purpose-built version with its own level layouts and a first-person viewpoint throughout. Mitchell operates alongside one AI-controlled Alpha teammate rather than directly leading the full squad arrangement found in some other editions, giving its missions a focused partner-based structure. The campaign still follows the central Advanced Warfighter storyline, but its missions and presentation were tailored for the older console.
Progress centers on completing military objectives while moving through urban combat zones. Assignments can involve reaching marked locations, clearing hostile positions, defending friendly forces, rescuing personnel, or dealing with enemy vehicles and fortifications. The player uses the left analog stick to move and sprint, the right stick to look and zoom, and can switch between standing and crouching stances. Cover, careful aiming, weapon selection, and a measured advance are central to surviving firefights, while quick missions let completed campaign stages be replayed with selectable equipment.
The PS2 game's Integrated Warfighter System places mission information directly in Mitchell's helmet display. Its HUD identifies objectives, friendly units, spotted threats, weapon status, health, and stamina, while the Cross-Com interface links the player to available support. Context-sensitive commands can send the Alpha teammate toward cover, tell him to attack a target, regroup, or operate a fixed gun. The same system can relay orders to support such as allied teams, vehicles, artillery, helicopters, or a reconnaissance UAV when a mission makes them available. Players can also choose between Recon behavior, which favors a cautious response, and Assault behavior, which permits more aggressive engagement.
Beyond the campaign, the PS2 release includes Quick Mission, Survival, and Enemy Hunt options. Survival asks Mitchell to hold out against mounting opposition, while Enemy Hunt challenges the player to locate and eliminate all foes in an area quickly. Its original online multiplayer supported two to eight players through a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor. Team Survival, Assault, and Supremacy place two sides in competitive matches, and the online implementation extends the game's intelligence-sharing idea by marking spotted opponents for teammates.
Advanced Warfighter arrived during a period when Ubisoft produced notably different versions of the same Ghost Recon entry for several systems. The PlayStation 2 release retains the series' near-future military setting, tactical interface, and mission-based campaign while interpreting them within a dedicated first-person design. It was followed in 2007 by Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, continuing the Advanced Warfighter branch of the franchise.
