About

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly for PlayStation 2 is a single-player 3D platform game released in North America in November 2002. Published by Universal Interactive and developed for this version by Check Six Games with Equinoxe Digital Entertainment, it brought the purple dragon’s exploration-led adventures to PS2. The story resumes after the events of Spyro: Year of the Dragon, when a Dragon Realms celebration is interrupted and the newly gathered dragonflies are scattered across the land. Spyro and his longtime dragonfly companion Sparx set out to bring them back and stop Ripto’s latest scheme.

The adventure is organized around home worlds and the portals that lead from them to individual realms. Each visit combines free-roaming platform exploration with objectives supplied by the inhabitants: locate dragonflies, search for gems, and complete special tasks to open a route home. Rescued dragonflies also govern access to further areas, so collecting them advances the journey as well as contributing to its overall completion. The in-game Atlas records the gems, dragonflies, tasks, and completion percentage for the locations Spyro has explored.

Spyro’s familiar movement set remains central to the PlayStation 2 game. He can run, jump, charge with his horns, breathe fire, glide, hover at the end of a glide, swim, and use a head bash. Sparx serves as the visual indicator of Spyro’s health; finding small creatures releases butterflies that restore him, making the worlds themselves part of the survival loop. Platforming frequently asks players to judge distance while gliding, search breakable objects for gems, and make use of movement skills in response to each area’s layout.

Enter the Dragonfly expands Spyro’s breath-based toolkit. Bubble breath is particularly important because it is used to capture the wandering baby dragonflies, while ice breath can freeze enemies and turn them into temporary footholds. Electric breath is used against certain threats and to activate equipment. Spyro can switch between breath types, and he also gains a wing-shield move for deflecting incoming projectiles. These abilities give the game’s combat and traversal a puzzle-like dimension beyond its standard flame attack and charge.

Not every challenge is handled on foot. The PS2 campaign includes dedicated vehicle sequences in which Spyro pilots or rides machines such as a tank, Spitfire-style plane, manta ray, and UFO. Speedway areas offer timed collection runs and obstacle-course races, changing the pace from the main platforming levels. Friends from the previous adventures return to help along the way: Hunter offers training, Bianca aids Spyro’s efforts, Zoe handles save points, and Moneybags provides access to some new routes in exchange for gems.

As the first mainline Spyro adventure made for PlayStation 2 and GameCube after Insomniac Games’ original PlayStation trilogy, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly occupies a distinct place in the series’ early transition to new hardware. The PS2 edition was issued first in North America on November 5, 2002, followed by releases in other regions later that month, including a version published in Europe by VU Games. Its blend of portals, collectible-driven progression, alternate breath powers, and vehicle challenges keeps the focus on the Dragon Realms while adding new ways for Spyro to explore them.
