About
The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest for PlayStation 2 is a 2010 single-player action role-playing game developed by TT Fusion and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Based on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, it places Aragorn at the center of a compact retelling of the War of the Ring. Samwise Gamgee frames the adventure from the Shire, where he recounts Aragorn's deeds to his children while preparations are under way for a visit by King Elessar and Arwen fifteen years after the conflict.
This PlayStation 2 release is a distinct version of Aragorn's Quest rather than a straight conversion of the Wii and PlayStation 3 game. Its action is viewed from an elevated three-quarter perspective and follows a more RPG-oriented structure. Aragorn travels from quest to quest, fighting the forces of Sauron with sword attacks and learned abilities. Defeated enemies and completed challenges supply experience, while earned points can be assigned to special skills, giving character growth a more central role than in the console versions built around motion-controlled swordplay.
The campaign adapts major episodes associated with Aragorn's journey across Middle-earth. It begins with the danger surrounding the hobbits and the road toward Rivendell, then moves through landmarks and battles inspired by the three films. The Fellowship's attempt to cross Caradhras, the approach to Moria and its confrontation with the Watcher in the Water, the struggle through the mines, the fight for Rohan, Dunharrow, Minas Tirith and the climactic war against Sauron all provide the framework for the game's missions. Aragorn is the playable hero, with familiar allies and enemies appearing as the story advances.
Combat emphasizes direct, accessible encounters against groups of orcs, Uruk-hai and other foes. Players steer Aragorn around each area, strike with his sword, manage his health, and apply the abilities unlocked through progression. The top-down viewpoint makes enemy packs and battlefield spaces easy to survey while still allowing the game to stage larger fantasy set pieces. Stages are organized around the campaign's objectives rather than a free-roaming hub, so the PlayStation 2 edition keeps its momentum on battles, exploration within each level and the next chapter of Sam's story.
Aragorn's Quest on PS2 also includes material and modes absent from the Wii and PlayStation 3 editions. There is no free-roam Shire overworld or drop-in cooperative partner; instead, this version offers an Arena mode alongside its story campaign. Its selection of locations likewise differs, with Caradhras, the Gates of Moria and Dunharrow among the stops that distinguish the PS2, PSP and Nintendo DS branch from the separately designed home-console release. These variations make platform identification especially important for anyone seeking the PS2 game.
Released as Warner Bros.' first Lord of the Rings game after the company acquired the video-game rights to the New Line Cinema film series, The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest presents a family-oriented route through Middle-earth. Its streamlined controls, level-based questing and experience-driven upgrades recast film-inspired moments as an approachable PS2 action RPG. For players browsing PlayStation 2 Lord of the Rings games, it stands apart from the earlier EA adaptations through its focus on Aragorn alone, its narration by Sam, and its platform-specific isometric format.
