About

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for PlayStation 2 is a 2007 single-player 3D action-platform game developed by Krome Studios and published by Sierra Entertainment. It is the second chapter of The Legend of Spyro, the continuity that reimagined Spyro as a young purple dragon in a high-fantasy adventure. Picking up directly after The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, the PS2 game follows Spyro, his dragonfly companion Sparx, and the recently freed black dragon Cynder as a new threat gathers around a coming celestial event.

The story begins at the Dragon Temple, where Cynder leaves in search of a place where she feels she belongs. Spyro pursues her through the surrounding swamp, only for the temple and its defenders to come under attack. His journey leads from the dragons' refuge toward strange locations including a living tree, pirate territory, and the mountain known as the Well of Souls. Along the way, Spyro learns more about the mysterious Chronicler, the Ape King Gaul, and the danger connected to the Night of Eternal Darkness.

On PlayStation 2, the adventure is built around directed 3D stages that mix platforming, combat encounters, environmental obstacles, and boss battles. Spyro uses close-range attacks such as headbutts alongside elemental breath powers. Fire, ice, electricity, and earth return as important parts of his toolkit, and he regains these abilities as the campaign progresses. Elemental attacks are useful against groups of enemies as well as in the game’s challenges, while upgraded melee techniques give each element its own style of attack.

A major addition to The Eternal Night is Dragon Time, a limited slow-motion ability that is earned early in the story and refills after use. It can give Spyro a safer opening in a fight, but it also changes how players approach hazards and puzzles. Slowing the action helps with fast-moving platforms and timed tasks that would otherwise be difficult to complete at normal speed. The game retains familiar movement and combat foundations from A New Beginning, while expanding aerial attacks and adding elemental melee options to the PS2 controls.

Exploration has a larger role than in the first Legend of Spyro game. Progress still leads through a mostly linear route, but stages include switches, moving objects, collectibles, and side paths that encourage players to look beyond the immediate fight. Purple gems support access to powerful elemental Furies, and collectible quills unlock pieces of concept art. The combination gives the adventure a loop of clearing enemies, navigating the route ahead, solving a local obstacle, and looking for optional rewards before the next major confrontation.

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night was released for PlayStation 2 alongside a Wii version, while Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and mobile releases with the same title were separately developed versions rather than the same console game. The PS2 and Wii editions share the central Krome Studios adventure; the Wii release adds higher-resolution textures and improved audio, but follows the same game. Elijah Wood returned as Spyro and Gary Oldman returned as Ignitus, with Billy West voicing Sparx. The story was completed the following year in The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, making The Eternal Night the trilogy’s pivotal middle chapter.
