About
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings on PlayStation 2 is a real-time strategy game set across the Middle Ages. Choose from 13 civilizations, establish a settlement, and direct its growth while trying to outlast or defeat rival powers.
Each match begins with a small group of villagers. They gather food, wood, gold, and stone, then use those supplies to create buildings, train armies, research improvements, and keep the economy working as demands increase.
Progress is measured through the Dark, Feudal, Castle, and Imperial Ages. Reaching a new age requires the proper structures and resources, but opens further technologies, military options, and larger strategic possibilities for the civilization in play.
Armies draw on infantry, archers, cavalry, siege weapons, and naval forces where the map allows. Different civilizations have their own strengths and unit access, so scouting terrain, choosing counters, protecting resource sites, and timing attacks are as important as building a large force.
The single-player content includes the William Wallace learning campaign and historical campaigns centered on Joan of Arc, Saladin, Genghis Khan, and Barbarossa. Skirmish games provide customizable maps, opponents, victory conditions, and other match settings for stand-alone battles.
Konami brought the game to PlayStation 2 with a dual interface: it can be played with the controller or with a compatible USB mouse. The screen-based command system is adapted for console use while preserving the selection, construction, and unit-order rhythm of the original real-time strategy design.
Multiplayer is also available alongside the solo modes, allowing players to test their expanding economies and armies against another human opponent. As an early console port of a PC strategy game, this version offers the core medieval building-and-battle experience in a PlayStation 2 release.
