About
Tales of the Abyss for PlayStation 2 is a fantasy action role-playing game from Namco Tales Studio, released in Japan in December 2005 and published in North America by Bandai Namco Games on October 10, 2006. It is the eighth main entry in the Tales series and was created as part of the franchise’s tenth-anniversary celebration. The adventure follows Luke fon Fabre, a sheltered young nobleman whose life has been restricted since a kidnapping seven years earlier left him with no memory of his past. When a confrontation involving the woman Tear Grants transports the pair far from Luke’s home, he is forced into a journey across the world of Auldrant.
Auldrant is shaped by fonons, elemental particles that underpin both its technology and its beliefs. At the center of its political and religious tensions is the Score, a prophecy recorded on ancient fonstones and treated by many people as a fixed account of the future. Luke’s travels bring him into the conflict surrounding the Order of Lorelei, the rival kingdoms of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear and Malkuth, and a threat that reaches well beyond a single border. His companions include Tear, the sharp-minded Malkuth colonel Jade Curtiss, Luke’s lifelong friend Guy Cecil, Princess Natalia, Fon Master Ion, and Ion’s guardian Anise. Their route gradually turns Luke’s sheltered perspective, uncertain identity, and connection to the prophecy into the core of the story.
Exploration combines towns, a world map, dungeons, conversations, and story scenes in the series’ 3D presentation. Encounters shift into the real-time Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System, where the controlled character attacks, guards, uses items, and performs artes while allied party members fight under player commands or AI settings. The Free Run feature lets a character circle enemies in any direction instead of being confined to a straight combat line, making placement and movement an important part of avoiding attacks and setting up openings. Players can choose equipment and abilities for the party, adjust battle behavior, and build each character around the tools they prefer to use.
The PS2 game adds the Field of Fonons system to those fast-paced battles. Elemental artes and spells can leave fields on the ground; strengthening a field and then using an appropriate technique within it can change that technique into a more powerful version. Capacity Cores award stat bonuses as characters level up and can unlock equipable AD Skills, while a charged Over Limit state opens the way for special Mystic Artes when the required conditions are met. Outside combat, the game retains familiar Tales features including optional skits between party members, cooking recipes with post-battle effects, titles, side activities, and a Grade total that can be spent on bonuses for a later playthrough. Up to four people can participate in local battles, even though exploration is handled by one player.
Tales of the Abyss stands as a substantial PlayStation 2-era Tales adventure with a character-driven journey, an action-oriented combat system, and a setting built around the consequences of living by prophecy. The North American PS2 release includes additional Mystic Artes compared with the original Japanese release, while its optional skits use translated text without the spoken dialogue heard in Japan. The game later reached Nintendo 3DS in 2011 in Japan and in 2012 in North America, preserving the main adventure while adapting skill selection to the handheld’s touch screen. For PS2 players, the original release remains the version that introduced Luke, Auldrant, Free Run, and Field of Fonons to the series.
