About

SSX 3 for PlayStation 2 is an arcade snowboarding game released in October 2003. Developed by EA Canada and published under the EA Sports BIG label, it is the third main entry in the SSX series. The PS2 game moves the competition to a single fictional mountain made up of three connected peaks, replacing the earlier games’ separate-course structure with long downhill routes that can be ridden continuously as new terrain becomes available.

Riders take part in two broad kinds of event. Race courses reward reaching the finish ahead of opponents, while freestyle disciplines ask players to build the highest score through slopestyle runs, big-air jumps, and super-pipe sessions. The boarder can carve across snow, launch from ramps, grind rails, spin and flip in the air, and find alternate routes or shortcuts. Crashes and collisions interrupt a run, so positioning a landing and choosing when to take a risky line matter alongside speed.

Tricks feed the game’s adrenaline system. Successful moves build a meter that can be spent for extra speed or advanced Über tricks, with more demanding Super Über moves becoming available as the meter rises. Chaining varied stunts increases a combo, whereas repeatedly using the same move reduces its value. This gives each descent a balance between racing downhill and seeking enough airtime to earn points, boost momentum, and meet the goals set for an event.

The single-player campaign is organized around Peak Goals. Completing competitions is only one route forward: players can also earn money, tackle challenges, and collect crystals while exploring the mountain in Freeride. Earnings support character progression through attribute improvements, boards, clothing, gear, and additional tricks, while lodges act as places to save, manage equipment, and adjust the music selection. A radio-style presentation accompanies the action and reports on the mountain as riders travel between courses.

SSX 3 also supports local multiplayer competition, letting two players face off in its racing and freestyle activities. The PlayStation 2 release additionally included an online two-player mode, a feature that distinguished it from the other contemporary console versions; its original service is no longer active. The PS2 controller layout uses the face buttons and shoulder buttons to combine grabs, spins, flips, and other moves, with the intensity of a run growing as riders master longer combinations.

As a PS2 snowboarding game, SSX 3 is defined by the scale and continuity of its mountain, from quick event attempts to extended rides from high slopes toward the base. Its stylized take on snowboarding keeps the focus on exaggerated jumps, speed, trick strings, and branching courses rather than simulation. The same 2003 console game also appeared for GameCube and Xbox, while separate handheld and later versions were developed for other systems; this PlayStation 2 edition is the one with the original online feature.
