About
Spider-Man 2 is a 2004 third-person action-adventure game for PlayStation 2, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Based on the film of the same name, it continues the game adaptation of Peter Parker’s story two years after the first Spider-Man game, while expanding the film material with additional villains, missions, and encounters across New York City.
The PS2 version places Spider-Man in an open-world recreation of Manhattan, with Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island also available to explore. Rather than moving between isolated stages, players can travel through the city and respond to incidents that appear around its streets, rooftops, and waterways.
Its defining movement system lets Spider-Man attach webs to the surrounding environment and swing from building to building. The player can build momentum, change direction in midair, climb walls, and dive toward street level, making traversal a central part of the experience rather than a short connection between missions.
Story missions follow Peter’s growing difficulty in balancing his personal life with his responsibilities as Spider-Man. Otto Octavius becomes Doctor Octopus after a disastrous fusion experiment, and Spider-Man is drawn into efforts to stop a second, dangerous attempt while protecting Mary Jane Watson and the city.
Alongside Doctor Octopus, the game introduces conflicts with characters including Black Cat, Rhino, Mysterio, Shocker, and Quentin Beck. Optional activities ask Spider-Man to stop robberies, chase criminals, deal with speeding vehicles, rescue civilians, and handle other emergencies, earning hero points that help unlock upgrades and advance chapters.
Combat combines punches, aerial attacks, web-based moves, and timed dodges. Spider-Man’s spider-sense can slow the action to help avoid incoming attacks, while missions range from citywide pursuits to more focused boss battles. Completing the main story also unlocks a bonus warehouse mode built around successive fights against enemies and bosses.
