About
SingStar Motown for PlayStation 2 is a karaoke and rhythm game released in Europe in September 2009 by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Developed by London Studio, it is a themed entry in Sony’s long-running SingStar series, built around recordings associated with Motown and its artists. Rather than telling a fictional story or sending players through conventional stages, the game turns a living-room performance into the central event: choose a song from the disc, take the microphone, and perform it against the original recording and music video.
Its basic challenge is pitch and timing. Lyrics appear on screen while horizontal note bars show the melody the player is expected to follow. The microphones analyse the sung input and award points for how closely a performance follows those targets, turning familiar choruses and verses into a score-driven musical challenge. This means a song can be approached casually as karaoke or played more competitively by trying to improve accuracy and beat a previous score. The PlayStation 2 game uses the series’ USB microphone setup, with two wired microphones connecting through the SingStar USB adaptor.
The Motown focus gives this release a distinct musical identity within a catalogue that often divided its discs by era, pop style, or particular artists. Its on-disc selection draws on songs linked to performers including the Temptations, the Four Tops, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and the Jackson 5. The repertoire spans the label’s classic soul and pop sound, with examples such as the Temptations’ “Get Ready,” the Four Tops’ “It’s the Same Old Song,” and Mary Wells’ “My Guy.” The result is a collection designed around a specific record-label legacy instead of a general contemporary chart playlist.
Two people can sing at once using the paired microphones, making the game suitable for either head-to-head scoring or shared vocal performances where a song supports them. The interface keeps the emphasis on the performance rather than on a complex controller scheme: players select music from menus, then follow the words and pitch display while the video plays. As with other later PlayStation 2 SingStar discs, it can also be used as part of the series’ disc-swapping format, allowing owners of compatible SingStar releases to access songs from another disc without restarting the console.
SingStar Motown arrived as Motown marked its 50th anniversary, placing the game in a moment when the label’s history was being celebrated across popular culture. It was released for both PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, but this PS2 version is the physical, playlist-focused edition: its songs and local multiplayer play are contained on the disc. For players exploring the later PlayStation 2 library, it represents one of the series’ genre-specific releases, preserving a Motown-centred set of sing-along performances in the familiar SingStar format.
