About

SingStar Legends for PlayStation 2 is a karaoke music game from Sony Computer Entertainment, developed by London Studio and released in Europe in late 2006. It is a disc-based entry in the long-running SingStar series, built around a selection of 30 licensed songs associated with performers from several decades. Rather than pursuing a single genre, the Legends collection moves among pop, rock, soul, country, and older standards, giving a PlayStation 2 party a broad musical starting point.

The basic goal is to sing along with the selected recording through compatible SingStar microphones. Lyrics run along the bottom of the screen while horizontal note bars show the melody and timing the game expects. The pitch detected from a player's voice is compared against those targets, producing a score as each phrase is sung. That makes the game approachable without conventional button-heavy play: choosing a song and following its vocal line are the central actions, while higher scores reward closer pitch and rhythm.

SingStar Legends supports solo performances and two people singing at once, whether they are trying to outscore one another or taking separate parts in an appropriate duet. Party-focused modes also let groups share the microphones across rounds and teams. A song can be tackled in full or in a shorter version, so a gathering can move through several performers without requiring every player to finish every recording. The presentation combines the karaoke interface with the relevant music video or performance footage, and an optional EyeToy camera can place the players' image into the on-screen experience.

The edition's identity comes chiefly from its repertoire rather than from a new ruleset. Its European selections include songs associated with artists such as Aretha Franklin, Barry White, David Bowie, Elton John, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Madonna, Nirvana, Queen, the Rolling Stones, U2, and the Jackson 5. Those examples illustrate the intended span from older vocal standards to modern rock and pop, but SingStar releases were localized in different territories, so a particular regional disc can differ in some selections. The PlayStation 2 Legends release should therefore be understood as a specific 2006 song collection within the series, not as a universal track list for every market.

Like other later PlayStation 2 SingStar discs, Legends can be used alongside compatible SingStar software through the series' disc-swapping feature: after starting with a master disc, players can change to another supported SingStar disc to access its songs without resetting the console. That context matters because the game was designed to expand a growing PS2 library of karaoke collections. SingStar Legends is consequently best framed as a focused addition for players who want its particular cross-era playlist, its microphone-based scoring, and its local multiplayer format rather than a separate narrative or career-driven music game.
