About
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love for PlayStation 2 is a dramatic adventure and tactical role-playing game set in a stylized New York City of 1928. Developed by Red Entertainment with Sega and published in North America by NIS America in 2010, it is the fifth main entry in the long-running Sakura Wars series. Originally released in Japan in 2005 as Sakura Taisen V: Saraba Itoshiki Hito yo, the game introduces a new branch of the series' theatrical defenders and makes its English-speaking debut with a new protagonist and a setting far from the earlier Tokyo and Paris stories.
Players follow Shinjiro Taiga, a young Japanese naval lieutenant sent to New York at the request of his uncle, Ichiro Ogami. Instead of immediately taking command, Shinjiro arrives as an inexperienced recruit and must earn the trust of the New York Combat Revue, also known as the Star Division. By day, the group works at the Littlelip Theater, staging musical productions for the city. When supernatural danger appears, its performers become a defense force, deploying in powered STAR machines to protect New York from demonic enemies.
Much of Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love takes place in adventure scenes around the theater and a 3D-rendered Manhattan. Shinjiro speaks with the cast, visits locations, and follows story episodes that balance backstage life with looming crises. Conversations use the series' LIPS system, which presents timed dialogue choices rather than treating exchanges as simple menus. Replies, hesitation, and certain context-sensitive responses affect how characters see Shinjiro, so an attentive choice can strengthen a relationship while a poorly judged answer can create friction.
The Star Division brings together personalities with very different backgrounds. Gemini Sunrise is a spirited cowgirl with samurai skills, while the team also includes the cool and disciplined Subaru Kujo, the sharp-shooting Cheiron Archer, the gentle Diana Caprice, and bounty hunter Rosarita Aries. Their captain, Ratchet Altair, initially leads the unit as Shinjiro learns its responsibilities. Each character has her own part in the larger story, and the bonds built during the adventure portions can lead to different personal scenes and, depending on the player's choices, a character-specific conclusion.
Combat shifts the game into turn-based tactical battles on three-dimensional maps. The player directs the Star Division's machines using a limited action-point allowance, choosing when to move, attack, defend, heal, charge energy, or use special techniques. Individual units are suited to different ranges and roles, making position and turn order important. Trust built outside battle has a practical role too: stronger relationships improve combat performance and can unlock more effective teamwork. Later encounters also take the machines into the air, expanding the same tactical approach beyond ground-based fights.
The central threat grows from attacks on the city to a confrontation with forces connected to Oda Nobunaga, placing Shinjiro and the Star Division's theatrical ideals against a supernatural campaign for control of New York. The game divides its plot across eight episodes, moving between character stories, stage performances, exploration, animated scenes, and major operations. Its New York setting gives this Sakura Wars entry a distinct visual identity, mixing period-inspired city landmarks, jazz-flavored theatrical presentation, and the series' blend of romance, comedy, fantasy, and mecha action.
For PlayStation 2 players, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is also notable as the first Sakura Wars title officially released in English. NIS America's localization made the fifth game a practical introduction for newcomers because it begins with Shinjiro joining a newly assembled team, while still carrying forward the series' signature combination of interactive drama and squad combat. The North American PS2 edition was released alongside a Wii version, with the PS2 package distinguished by its additional Japanese voice disc. It remains a self-contained chapter whose changing relationships and tactical missions show why Sakura Wars has long stood apart from a conventional strategy RPG.
