About

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja is CyberConnect2’s PlayStation 2 fighting game based on Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga and anime. It began in Japan as Naruto: Narutimate Hero, released on October 23, 2003, and stands as the first Narutimate Hero game as well as the first entry in the Ultimate Ninja line known outside Japan. Bandai brought this debut west as Naruto: Ultimate Ninja in North America in June 2006, followed by Australia in November 2006 and Europe in February 2007. Its compact, early-series focus makes it a snapshot of Naruto before the later Shippuden era and before the series’ larger follow-ups expanded the cast and story.

The game stages one-on-one ninja battles in a stylized, side-view presentation that draws its look from the manga and television animation. Cel-shaded character models, comic-panel-like scene transitions, expressive portraits and named techniques put the emphasis on recognizable personalities and attacks rather than realism. Fights take place across locations associated with the early story, including the Hidden Leaf Village, the Chunin Exam arena and the Forest of Death. The arenas give familiar rivalries a setting while the match itself remains centered on spacing, attacks, counters and managing the chakra available for ninja techniques.

Each fighter has a distinct move set built around ordinary attacks, combos, throws, aerial actions, ninja tools and chakra-powered jutsu. Chakra is also spent on the substitution jutsu, letting a defender escape at the right moment instead of simply absorbing a hit. Building enough chakra opens the way to a character’s Secret Technique, turning a successful opportunity into one of the dramatic signature attacks that define the game’s anime-inspired style. The result is an accessible fighting system whose individual characters still encourage players to learn different ranges, attacks and special options.

The original Japanese version has twelve playable characters drawn from the opening arcs: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Kakashi Hatake, Rock Lee, Shikamaru Nara, Neji Hyuga, Hinata Hyuga, Haku, Zabuza Momochi, Gaara and Orochimaru. Several are unlocked through play, so the roster grows as scenarios are completed. The cast covers Team 7, Chunin Exam competitors, and major opponents from the Land of Waves and later early-series material, giving the game matchups that reflect the period of Naruto it adapts.

The Western release makes an important roster change. Rather than keeping Nine-Tailed Naruto and Curse Mark Sasuke as stronger forms of the standard Naruto and Sasuke characters, it presents them as two separately selectable bonus characters. That raises the Western selectable lineup to fourteen while changing how those power-ups are accessed. The distinction matters for players comparing the localized version with Narutimate Hero: the core combatants are the same, but the treatment of the two powered versions is not.

Scenario Mode provides character-focused battles and dialogue, and completing scenarios unlocks additional fighters for the other modes. Mission Mode frames fights as ninja assignments with ranked progression, rewards and specific conditions beyond simply winning; completing missions earns experience and ryo while opening more challenges. Free Battle supports matches against the CPU or a second player, making the roster and stages available for direct versus play. Practice Mode provides a lower-pressure space to test moves and learn each fighter’s command list, with health and chakra restored as training continues.

Progress also feeds a collection and shop structure. Ryo earned from fights and missions can be used to obtain items, while hidden scrolls and other unlocks reward exploration of the game’s stages and modes. This gives a single-player reason to revisit battles beyond the initial scenarios, whether the goal is a new character, a higher mission rank, a stage-related collectible or a fresh technique to examine in practice. The design ties the game’s short-form fights to a broader loop of unlocking and completion.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja is therefore a foundational Naruto fighting game for PlayStation 2: an early-series roster, recognizable locations and a compact set of solo and local-versus modes built around jutsu and Secret Techniques. It does not attempt to cover the whole saga; instead, it concentrates on the characters and confrontations available at the time, then turns them into fast, stylized duels. For players exploring the series’ history, it is the Western starting point for CyberConnect2’s long-running Ultimate Ninja games and the original Narutimate Hero formula that later entries would build upon.
