About

Namco x Capcom PS2 is a Japan-only tactical role-playing crossover released by Namco on May 26, 2005. Developed by Monolith Soft, the game brings together characters and worlds associated with both Namco and Capcom in an original interdimensional adventure. It is pronounced “Namco Cross Capcom” and is not a fighting-game crossover: its foundation is map-based strategy, with attacks unfolding through timed action sequences. The enormous cast draws from series including Xenosaga, Tekken, Klonoa, Pac-Man, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Resident Evil, and Strider.

The story begins when strange distortions disrupt cities and connect previously separate realities. Shinra agents Reiji Arisu and Xiaomu, an original duo created for the game, investigate the incidents and become the thread linking allies from the two companies’ game worlds. Their case grows into a struggle against the organization Ouma and the force behind the disruptions. Familiar heroes and rivals do not simply make cameos; they exchange dialogue, form temporary parties, and take part in a single scenario built around the collision of their settings.

Each chapter combines long story scenes with a turn-based battle on a grid viewed from above. Player-controlled units advance toward objectives such as defeating enemy forces, and actions are managed through Ability Points. Some fighters travel on foot while others can fly or otherwise handle terrain differently, so positioning and the order of turns matter before combat begins. The roster includes paired units as well as individual combatants, reflecting the variety of characters and combat styles represented by the two catalogs.

When opposing units meet, Namco x Capcom shifts to a side-on battle display. Players press buttons in time to chain a character’s attacks, while successful combinations improve the rewards earned from an encounter. The system also includes defensive responses when the enemy attacks, special moves charged through battle, and Multi-Assault techniques that let eligible units work together. Experience raises characters’ levels, while shops and optional training encounters give players ways to prepare between story missions. This blend of tactical movement and input-based attacks is the game’s defining structural idea.

The project was built as part of Namco’s 50th-anniversary period and grew from Monolith Soft’s proposal for a Namco character crossover. Capcom joined the project, expanding its scale to more than 200 characters from titles spanning different eras. Souichiro Morizumi, known for work on Super Robot Wars, directed and wrote the game, while Koji Ishitani produced it. Its presentation also makes room for music associated with the featured properties, with original vocal themes composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

Namco x Capcom remained exclusive to Japan and PlayStation 2, so there is no official overseas PS2 edition. Its premise and battle approach later informed Project X Zone, the 2012 Nintendo 3DS crossover that again involved Monolith Soft and added Sega characters; that later game is a separate release, not this title’s PS2 version. For players interested in a single-player strategy RPG where a large collection of Namco and Capcom characters is woven into one new story, the original 2005 game stands as an early example of that collaborative format.
