About
LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is a 2006 action-adventure game for PlayStation 2, developed by Traveller's Tales and published by LucasArts. It follows LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, moving from the prequel films to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. The familiar characters, locations, vehicles, and dramatic set pieces of the original film trilogy are rebuilt as playful LEGO scenes, with physical comedy replacing spoken dialogue in story cutscenes.
The campaign begins at the Mos Eisley cantina, which serves as the game's central hub. From there, players enter levels based on major moments from the three films, including the escape from the Death Star, the Battle of Hoth, the Cloud City confrontation, and the assault on the second Death Star. Each film is represented by six story levels, while additional bonus stages and hub activities give players further reasons to return after seeing the main story.
Play mixes straightforward combat, platforming, light environmental puzzles, and the series' signature break-and-build routines. LEGO objects can be smashed into loose bricks and rebuilt into useful mechanisms, such as switches, platforms, or vehicles. Characters carry tools and abilities associated with their roles: lightsaber users can use the Force and reflect blaster fire, droids operate certain terminals, small characters reach narrow openings, and bounty hunters can access specific explosive solutions.
The PlayStation 2 version supports drop-in local cooperative play, allowing a second player to join with another controller during the adventure. Cooperation can make combat and puzzles more flexible, especially when the available characters have different skills. Traveller's Tales also refined the camera behavior from the first game and expanded the vehicle-focused sections, so the game alternates between on-foot scenes and sequences involving ships and other recognizable Star Wars transport.
Story Mode initially provides the characters appropriate to each film scene. Completing levels opens Free Play, where unlocked characters can be taken back into earlier stages to reach secrets that were inaccessible during the first visit. The large roster includes heroes, villains, droids, creatures, and alternate character versions from the original trilogy. Players can also assemble custom characters from unlocked LEGO parts in the cantina, giving the game a deliberately toy-box approach to replaying its film material.
Collecting is a major part of the experience. Studs act as currency for unlocking characters, vehicles, hints, and extras, while hidden minikit pieces combine into vehicle models. Levels also contain power bricks that unlock purchasable modifiers, and gold bricks reward story progress and collection goals. This structure encourages replaying familiar missions with new abilities rather than treating the campaign as a one-time trip through the films.
LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy was released during a period when the original Star Wars films were receiving renewed attention on home video, and it became one of Traveller's Tales' early successes with the LEGO formula. Its accessible challenge, visual humor, two-player play, and collectible-driven design helped establish the direction of later LEGO licensed games. On PlayStation 2, it remains a family-friendly interpretation of the classic trilogy that pairs recognizable movie moments with cooperative action and brick-built experimentation.
