About
Killzone for PlayStation 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Amsterdam studio Guerrilla and published by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2004. The game introduces the Killzone universe on the PS2, placing an Interplanetary Strategic Alliance squad in the middle of a Helghast invasion of the human colony world Vekta. Its science-fiction conflict is framed with a deliberately militarized visual style, taking the action from battered urban areas and defensive positions to other war-torn locations across the planet.
The campaign begins with ISA Captain Jan Templar as Vekta’s defenses are overwhelmed. Templar’s immediate mission becomes part of a larger effort to find intelligence officer Gregor Hakha and learn how the invading force breached the Solar Defense network. The story follows the effort to stop the Helghast advance and restore the system before it can be turned against the fleet coming to Vekta’s aid. Helghast commander General Joseph Lente and the wider threat from Helghan establish the conflict that the series continues to explore.
Although Templar is central to the campaign, Killzone PS2 gives the player four ISA operatives to use: Templar, Shadow Marshal Luger, heavy gunner Rico Velasquez, and the half-Helghast Hakha. Their different equipment and abilities shape the feel of combat, from Luger’s stealth-oriented approach to Rico’s heavier firepower. Friendly characters accompany missions, while enemy soldiers use cover, move through combat spaces, and engage the squad amid firefights. Guerrilla’s own post-release technical presentation describes tactics such as tactical pathfinding, suppression fire, grenade handling, and simultaneous AI combatants.
Combat is played from a first-person perspective and centers on advancing through enemy-held territory with firearms, grenades, mounted guns, and weapons collected in the field. The PlayStation 2 game includes a broad armory of conventional and futuristic equipment, and its missions move through eleven environments designed around the invasion. Rather than presenting Vekta as a single battlefield, the campaign uses changing locations and objectives to convey a colony under sustained attack, from close-quarters confrontations to larger defensive engagements.
Killzone also included multiplayer designed for the PlayStation 2’s Network Adaptor. Broadband online play supported up to 16 players and USB Headset voice chat, while its competitive options included free-for-all Deathmatch and team-based Team Deathmatch, Domination, Supply Drop, Assault, and Defend & Destroy. These modes shift the focus from the campaign’s ISA squad to faction-based battles, with objectives such as controlling switches, securing containers, or defending designated targets. The PS2 release is therefore both a single-player science-fiction war story and an early online squad shooter for the platform.
As Guerrilla’s first entry in the series, Killzone established the opposing Vektan and Helghast factions, the ISA, and the world that later games revisited. It was followed by the PSP title Killzone: Liberation, set after the original game, and later console installments, but the 2004 PlayStation 2 release remains the starting point for the franchise. The original game was later remastered as Killzone HD for PlayStation 3, preserving the PS2 campaign for a later generation while leaving its original release firmly rooted in Sony’s 2004 PlayStation 2 lineup.
