About

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings for PlayStation 2 is a 2009 third-person action-adventure game developed by Artificial Mind & Movement and published by LucasArts. It gives the fedora-wearing archaeologist an original globe-spanning mission set in 1939, shortly after the events of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Indiana must reach the legendary Staff of Kings, said to be the staff used by Moses to part the Red Sea, before Nazi forces can claim it. His chief rival is the new villain Magnus Völler, an archaeologist whose pursuit of the artifact turns the expedition into a race across dangerous territory.

The story opens with an expedition in Sudan and develops through destinations including San Francisco, Panama, Istanbul, and Nepal. Along the way, Indy follows leads concerning the missing Professor Charles Kingston and encounters allies and adversaries created for this adventure. Ancient temples, jungles, city streets, underground spaces, enemy camps, and airborne danger give the campaign a succession of changing backdrops. The game tells a self-contained Indiana Jones tale rather than adapting one particular film, while deliberately drawing on the serial-style escapes, archaeological mysteries, and escalating stakes associated with the series.

On PS2, Staff of Kings is played from a third-person view and mixes exploration with close-quarters action. Indiana’s fists and whip are central to confrontations, while his pistol is reserved for particular shooting sequences. The controller-based version lets players use the analog stick to pull a whipped opponent closer, turning the whip into a way to control the space around Indy as well as a tool for reaching interactive points. Encounters can involve punching, kicking, dodging, grappling, and using whatever is at hand, so a brawl can become more than a simple exchange of attacks.

A defining PS2 feature is the use of interactive environments known as Hot Sets. Scattered objects and fixtures can become part of the action: players may use found items against opponents or manipulate the surroundings to create an opening. This idea carries into the adventure’s puzzles and traversal, where examining a room, locating usable mechanisms, navigating hazards, and finding a route through ruins are as important as winning a fight. The journey also breaks up on-foot exploration with set-piece action, including chases and shooting segments, keeping the game’s momentum focused on cinematic escapes as well as artifact hunting.

Collectibles provide an extra reason to search each location rather than rushing straight to the next objective. Hidden artifacts and completed Glory achievements feed into the game’s unlockable content, with a journal keeping track of discoveries and progress. That structure suits a campaign built around distinct locations: players investigate an area, deal with its traps or enemies, uncover the next clue, and move on to the next leg of the hunt. The result is a PlayStation 2 Indiana Jones game that combines physical combat, light platforming, environmental puzzles, and spectacle instead of concentrating on only one style of play.

Staff of Kings arrived on several systems in 2009, but each version was designed around its hardware. The PS2 edition uses conventional analog-stick-and-button controls and emphasizes its environmental Hot Set interactions; the Nintendo DS version uses stylus input, while the Wii version was built around gesture controls and has separate extras not present in the PS2 release. For players exploring the LucasArts-era Indiana Jones games, this installment stands as a later original adventure with a new cast, a 1930s setting, and a treasure hunt structured around the character’s familiar whip, wits, and willingness to outrun one more collapsing ruin.
