About
Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Nintendo. Players guide Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa, with Luigi available for a second player.
Each stage leads toward a flagpole, with pits, moving hazards, and enemies such as Goombas and Koopa Troopas shaping the route. Mario can defeat many foes by jumping on them, while question blocks, coins, and concealed areas reward careful exploration.
Power-ups change how the adventure is approached. A Super Mushroom lets Mario absorb a hit and break certain bricks, the Fire Flower grants fireballs, and the Starman provides a short period of invincibility. Green 1-Up Mushrooms and coin collection can add extra lives.
Nintendo designed the opening level to introduce its rules through play, placing enemies, blocks, and a mushroom in sequence rather than relying on a lengthy explanation. The game uses eight worlds of four stages, with castles marking the end of each world and Bowser waiting at the final one.
First released in Japan for the Famicom in 1985, Super Mario Bros. reached the NES in North America in 1986 and PAL regions in 1987. Its scrolling stages, responsive movement, and music by Koji Kondo helped establish the template for later platform games and launched the long-running Super Mario series.
